FWIW, you can’t really compare MPG. Elevation, weather, the terrain, added/removed weight, fuel system condition, driving habits, etc etc etc....It’s nearly impossible to straight up compare MPG.

The reason manuals are rated slightly higher highway mpg is because the auto has a torque converter.

thrill of able to control and put the gear in myself trumps any disadvantages
I get that, but as you know, with almost every automatic these days, there is a manual shift mode that you can change the gears with and put it exactly where you like. Personally I only use that feature on supercars as they actually need it, but it's nice to have for when you're trying to control your torque manually.

Yeah I know but it's just not the same as actually pressing in the clutch and then put it into gear

Yeah. It's harder, I get it. lol.
It's funny, I grew up with a mix of both manual and auto cars and really LOVE manual in under-powered small cars (like MGs and Triumphs).
I always thought clutch shifting in motorcycles was amazing too until I installed my speedshifter. It has changed the game for me so much that I don't think I'll ever want to ride without it again.

With all the downsides of getting a manual, why are you considering it still? Just have to have the shift knob?
In the past week there has been at least 6 posts about the disadvantages of the JT manual implementation and as much as I like manual transmissions I can imagine that I would opt for a manual JT at this point.
For me it's as simple as... this for the first time is a vehicle just for me. I have always enjoyed manuals, so that reason alone is enough for me. The downfalls of a manual are not downfalls to me because I dont need auto start, adaptive cruise control or killer tow ratings.

Oh.. and i am truly afraid manuals as a whole will be gone in another decade or so if not earlier.. so best to enjoy it now.

My ‘72 beetle was manual, my ‘78 Celica was manual, my ‘84 Civic was manual, my ‘91 Wrangler was manual, my ‘94 Jetta was manual and my ‘11 GTI IS manual but my 2020 Gladiator is a fantastic 8-speed automatic. I know I’ll need a walker with tennis balls on the bottom in short order but I never regretted the manual.

My other vehicle is a 2012 GTI 6 speed manual.
I also went with a automatic Gladiator.

Good choices.

I have been using the manual shift mode extensively for years. Need to pass on the highway? Go manual and change gears to get 4000 RPM and you have instant torque. Going into a curve? Same, instant torque coming out the other side. I'm not sure if the tranny will drop out some day from this technique. LOL

Suppose you bought the first automatic available in a Jeep CJ. You earned the right to preach.

(Your grandbabies need not be explaining how cool automatics are, they should be out inventing machines to lower Earth's temperature, feed a billion people, go to Mars, you know, shit you can do with computers they didn't have when inventing the automatic.)

Edit: I'm just saying this because I like manuals. Wah-wah.

The sheer joy of it doing what I tell it to do between the gear and the pedal are worth any disadvantage. None of the disadvantages affect my intended use or I might have taken them into consideration.

I truly can't wait to push the clutch and grab that 1st gear again!

I really thought about it for the same reasons stated, definitely miss the fun of “actively” driving as opposed to the vehicle doing it all for me. I miss my 4-speed CJ-7 experience and, with this one being a car that I will likely be the only one to drive, thought it might be cool to go manual. But the technology and safety features won out in the end. The adaptive cruise control on my wife’s grand Cherokee is way cool for driving in the suburban area north of Atlanta (I am starting to give out coloring books to Atlanta drivers so they can practice staying between the lines) and I know there were a few other things that only come with the automatic too. Maybe someday I will find an old ‘84 CJ-7 that I can pick up to play with and enjoy the flash backs

Same JTs are sitting on the lots in my area. Curious what will happen when the Sport base shows creating cheaper option
