I had something similar happen to my JK, but it was the locker that started to come apart. Dealer had it for just over 6 months, and the only repair solution was to wait for an entire rear axle assembly, as Jeep was not interested in any other solution. I kept getting promises on parts delivery…all of which were missed. When the first axle was delivered to the dealer, it was dropped and the housing cracked, so waited another 45 days for another axle assembly.

Looking back, since I can setup my own rear ends, I would have taken my jeep home and just fixed it myself and ate the costs.

Fortunately, I had my 47 CJ2a Truck conversion that I built several years ago, so the 47 went with us that year to Moab for our winter trip and turned out to be a blast having the old jeep in its natural habitat.

How long is too long? I think it depends upon how much money your are willing to spend to fix it yourself…
Yikes. Always get a loaner. They have zero incentive to make you whole without one. If they don’t have one available make them rent you a car.

This is a 21' Mojave. Stock except for 35's.
Started hearing a loud, speed dependent noise at what I thought was the front diff. Took for service (still under powertrain warranty) and they said it was a rear pinion failure (not a seal, the pinion gear itself). The tech guessed this was what it was from description and later confirmed it. I was surprised then that I didn't see a whole bunch of posts on it.
The issue is there is no part availability and no ETA on part availability. No loaner available from dealer either.
Have Jeep Cares involved and they couldn't really offer anything.
They did say that the whole rear axle is the replacement part.
Any thoughts on this? How long is reasonable to wait for something to develop and what are my options? Been at the dealer about 10 days so far.
I have my 4.10 stock gear set front and rear just sitting if you want em? free of charge I'm in NOVA.

Here's a pic of the bearing with part# I have a spare.

Here's a video as well:

Thanks for taking the time to make the video and share the info 👍

Also want to note, those taper bearings you posted may require a shim to make up for some minor clearances. At least that is what is shown and assumed based on the link for bearing kit you posted on your video. My first thought was to just buy the bearings from a supply house, but you will likely need the shim too.

Nope, no loaners were given and was denied when I pushed. I had the 1 million mile warranty offered by Jeep with zero deductible, and Jeep gave me nothing but hassles to approve the warranty. They even sent out an inspector to try and blame me for the failure, but in the end, there was no way to blame me for the failure, so all they could do is delay, delay delay and hope I got tired of of the hassles and just fixed it myself. This is the reason I don’t buy extended warranties and don’t value the base warranty. In the end, I’ll just deal with repairs myself...less stress…

When I got upset with Jeep ”customer service” after 3 months, I was told I was certainly able to pick up my jeep anytime I wanted...yup, they were a ton of help. I just waited them out and got a new rear end.

Thank you. It's all good. Just hoping that it helped someone.

And you are correct. The bearing kit actually comes with a shim. I just didn't take it out of the box. But it comes with one. So, if you buy the kit from someone like Trail Forge, you get all three pieces which include the shim.

Thanks everybody for your contributions. I'm going to find out if we're talking about the bearing, which it would seem, or the actual pinion gear, which is what I was lead to believe.
I think if just the bearing I would look to have it upgraded even if on my own dime.

Why would Dana change from a bearing that has proven itself for decades?

Don't forget howling, both from the bearing and disgruntled customers.
I don't mind spending coin on upgrades but correcting factory flaws on a $60K+ truck gets old quickly.

About how many hours would I expect/what would I look to pay to have the rear pinion bearing replaced with the Timken unit after they warranty replace the whole axle?
They would not swap them during install as nice as that would be.
So that I don't have this problem again down the road.

Lived thru this with back to back axle failures. Dealers do not rebuild axles. They replace them. If first failure Moline IL they replace the whole rear axle. It too two and a half weeks. Drove it less than 100 miles and shelled a rear axle bearing, again a whole axle replacement. This time it took a month. I am replacing the rear axle with a Semi Float D60 to solve future issues.

Doing gears (Pinion replacement) is in the neighborhood of $1800-$2500 parts and labor.

Uchh, that would be a nightmare scenario.
The dealer did tell me though that there are metal remnants from the pinion gears so just a bearing replacement would not suffice.

Does that D60 still use the same bad bearing?
