Couple of questions. I plan to hit the road in a few days heading to Moab, round trip will be about 3000+. So, here is my question My truck is just stock 23 Mojave. I only plan to do the Rating #4 trails or easier should I spend the cash on a receiver skid plate. The cheapest Ive found is about 100.00 bucks and that's about 400 miles worth of fuel. I'm kinda on a cheap budget but I have to go. So,is the receiver skid necessary.

Since I'm towing my Casita travel trailer I'll either dispersed camp or find a RV park. I expect the temperatures will be pretty doable this time of year for boon docking. I'm just concerned about trailer security when out on the trails.

From Moab, I was planning to turn east for a bit into Colorado, then head south back home a total of 10 days.

I'm about to find out because I'm going first week of october and I think they're kind of stupid. I've never had a hitch deform from obstacles, so it's as good as a skid to me in and of itself. But I haven't beat a school bus length truck through Moab before either.

Limiting clearance to avoid damage doesn't sit well with me, it defeats the point. Same with these bolt on control arm skids. Cut and weld or take the damage.

::edit::
now that I think about it why not just cut a cheap hitch tube or similar piece and stuff it in the receiver for reinforcement so it doesn't deform. Done.

I would absolutely get a skid. It is so easy to bump around with the long wheelbase and gives you peace of mind. There are simply some lines you can't avoid without bumping around.

You're also towing, imagine if you damage the receiver, that's going to be one heck of a bill. It really doesn't limit your angles and even so just drag it out if it does.

Thanks, the possibility of doing damage to the Hitch would definetly make for bad trip. probably order one tonight.

Warfab is a good option , and protects the safety chain loops, plus is solid attachment point , I modified mine so it is up close to the chain loops. It gets used every time as for others skids being a waste the bolt on ones work and mine are beat up the only two control arm frame points up front are both damaged but bolt on skids are going on . I run an unlifted Mojave and skids get used and bent , I would rather protect then repair. Your towing and should get a wide one to protect the chain loops, they bend easy…..Jack

Thanks for the advice Jaxmax.
Price goes up considerably for the wide plate type. Sad part is I have some old not being used 2" receiver drop hitches.
I think I might try and see if I can borrow my sons stick welder and do some modification.

Love the " NEVER UNDERESTIMATE AN OLD MAN & HIS JEEP."
I'm 70 so if a saying ever hit home that one is top contender.

With a slide in receiver and some 1/4 inch plate you can make a nice skid.

JTGuy, that looks heavy duty, wished I wasn't pressed for time. I just ordered a Bodyarmor 5136 version from Amazon. Im sure it's no where near as stout as yours, good looking fabrication
