There’s plenty of 40’s with stock brakes, transmission and cooling. In my mind the axle is the one that’s questionable.
The wife's JLUR with the xr package (steel knuckles and 4.56 gears, 10mm axle tubes) has been on 39s since 20k miles. Its over 50k now and we just put the second set on. Aside from teraflex hd ball joints at ~35k the axles are stock. Front tie rod is stock too. Drag link is a steersmarts no drill flipped drag link. It's run the Rubicon, John Bull, holcomb creek, and a whole bunch of other trails. We try to pick good lines and crawl it, but we certainly aren't easy on it. You'll find most if not all of the guys that say you need shafts and trusses and all of the steering links and control arms upgraded didn't actually break anything. That's just what they did when they went to 40s so they'll say you NEED to also. It's a shot to their pride when a guy with actual stock axles and $10k less in to his rig runs harder trails than they do and doesn't break anything.

Is the axle tube thickness more on the XR?

Will 40’s fit with a 17x9 -12 wheel? No reason I’ll need a -38 is there?

my rims are 20x10 -24. i have 10" of sidewall flex. using the 17" you would have more at 11.5" sidewall. i find the 17"/40" combo looked cartoonish. again, only my opinion. my first set of tires came from prioritytire.com as they were the cheapest. today they are $587 a pop. my second of 4 set came from walmart.com for $2009.50 delivered to my front door via fedex. i use oem tire pressure sensors. probably overkill.

I don’t want to have to do shafts and truss’s though. When I say a stock d44 I mean stock haha
You can run 40's on bone stock axles; all you need is a lift, gears and maybe spacers depending on the wheels and backspacing. I went with 5.13 gears.

I wheeled on stock axles and 40's and never broke anything; its just taking time and being careful. I started taking more trips so I beefed up my front axle but my rear is still unmodified/ stock to this day.

With the 8 speed auto and the XRs 4.56 gears you don't even need gears. The wife's JLUR is pushing 55k miles on 39s. Ball joints were upgraded when worn out at 35k but otherwise the axles are stock. From roadtrips at 85mph to the rubicon trail, it does it all with no issues. The factory 86-1 crawl ratio is more than enough to crawl anywhere.

Yea, makes sense; I had 3.73 so it was a must for me.
