RSi Cap or rack system

I have been looking at getting a gladiator as well as how I would outfit it. I was wondering about opinions, thoughts, comments, etc. on options for the bed. I would want something that I can secure gear and keep it dry as well. So I was looking into a RSi cap, or similar cap. Or would you recommend a rack system that will work with a rolling tonneau cover? Curious to get feed back on the options and/or any ideas.

It all depends what gear you’re gonna be carrying. The biggest one for me was my roof top tent.

I wanted to keep that as close to cab height as possible. I didn’t want to make the gladiator any LESS aerodynamic. So I opted for a half-height rack with a tonneau cover. This combo worked but rolling the cover back was a giant PIA. And i did t have any room for a fridge slide.

If it wasn’t for the tent, I would’ve gone the cap route.

I had a tri-fold aluminum tonneau on mine for 3+ years prior to purchasing a RDL cap from another forum member. Loved the tonneau, actually. It was weatherproof, secure, good looking, etc. HOWEVER, when we would trip off for the weekend it was often a challenge to get all of our stuff under the cover. Coolers, especially, were a challenge. The Gladiator bed is just not very deep and even a moderately tall cooler would keep the cover from closing tightly. Thus, I went looking for a good cap. It's all in what you want to do with your truck. If I were camping, I'd likely tent it on the ground. But I'm old school and a miser. A roof top tent on the RDL would be very tall and severely impact clearance. It would also likely have a negative effect on gas mileage. Thus, a rack/ RTT combo would make good sense, (along with a short cooler).

As far as a cap vs open-air rack, I've had a Rebel Off-road Xplor rack with Literider Access soft cover before the AluCab and it was also great. It just depends if you want a more weather-proof, lockable solution.

Depends on the use case. If running a roof top tent I'd prefer a rack that keeps the tent closer to roof level. I don't use a roof top tent so I'd prefer something like the Alu Cab Canopy - however that is not in the budget (hopefully end of year). I'm running a rack to hold my awning, storage, and lights until a bed cap fits in the budget. Leaving the bed open for now with no tonneau cover. Everything that goes in there is just in water proof cases or doesn't matter if it gets wet.
