A person determined to drive like a moron will find a way to wreck you both no matter how careful you are.
The ACC discussion fascinates me. I’ve driven my entire life in NJ, including over a decade twice a day on RT 78 into NYC. I’ll put that drive against any in America in terms of needing to have your head on a swivel.
Never would I ever consider giving steering or throttle/ brakes to the vehicle. Stability control? Yes. ABS? Yes. All things that could be considered the car “taking over”. There are some things that machines can do more efficiently than men. Making judgment calls is not one of them.
Seen many, many wrecks and sat in the delays they created. Some were horrific. Most clearly were caused either by someone following too closely or not paying attention.
Maybe some were counting on tech to bail them out. That is not the technology’s fault.
I would regularly see colleagues on the road making the same ride, and of course they’d see me, and I got more than a few teascomments about my demeanor driving- 10 & 2, eyes forward, a look of concentration on my face.
Well no shit. If you want to get home to your family without hurting someone, including yourself, sounds like a reasonable posture to take.
I’m not aware of any technology that solves for laziness, carelessness or stupidity. All three on display daily on a road near you.
