I just got a 2026 Gladiator. The 85th Anniversary trim. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the more serious off road machines, but it does have the manual lever to shift between 2 and 4 wheel drive. My Grand Cherokee and my Ram both had electric shift mechinisms so I did nothing except push a button and the electronics handled all, even the shift to 4L.
So, question from a new guy: It's quite stiff, maybe because it's new or maybe because I'm not pulling hard or quick enough. Are there any recomendations as per how to do it? Moving vs stopped, equipment hot vs cold, trans in Neutral vs Drive etc.
All 'hints' appreciated, even the most basic.
Thanks

It’ll be stiff right off the lot. Shift in and out of them a few times on some easier tracks and it’ll loosen up eventually.

2WD to 4HI, you can be in drive and shift, or in neutral, or even be moving at a lower speed (the manual covers this in detail).

2WD to 4LO you need to be stopped, ideally in neutral.

Again - check the manual.

But the big thing here is - its a manual shifter connected directly to the transfer case with a linkage. You have to give it a good hard rip to get it in gear.

2wd to 4hi you can shift on the fly up to 45mph. 4hi to 4low you need to be stopped and in neutral. It'll be stiff the first few times. It'll become easier the more you shift it.

I found going 4H to 4L, the first couple of times, if I took my foot off the brake and the truck could roll forward it would help drop it into 4L
