This topic came up in another forum I’m on.

We have Erie now but when the time comes to renew I’m going to check out Amica..

No agents. You deal direct with the company and it is one of the highest rated insurance company in Forbes 2023 ranking…

Check out Progressive. I just switched from USAA to them.
I've been with USAA for over 35 years. I have 2 PU's including the Gladiator, a rental policy and an RV. I'm paying over $1300 every 6 mos...and I feel it's high...but I typically don't shop it around. How have you liked Progressive since switching?

I hear ya on being a long time member, I am family generation number 3 with them. With the switch - I enjoy the savings of switching! Between my Gladiator and my wife’s Jetta, we are paying $500/6 months for auto With the same coverage we had with USAA. We did bundle home as well so I’m sure that added an extra discount. I haven’t had any claims to file with Progressive, but when signing up the agents were nice and there was no hold time. It’s only been about a year since switching.

When I spoke with USAA, they were extremely nice when I had to cancel and were very upfront that they couldn’t match the home/auto quote Progressive gave me. I actually thought what I was paying with USAA was normal until I saw a friend’s post on FB about them switching and saving a ton. Like I said in another post, I do still do my regular banking with them, but when I am spending triple what I usually spend on groceries due to inflation, something’s gotta give.

The problem with threads like this where costs come up is - location location location, plus - deductibles, and other fine print.
What's covered as far as contents, for how much, among many many other things. Limits of liability, limits on underinsured or uninsured and so on.
You can't just toss a number out and say "I'm saving a lot" over another person or policy unless you lay out the details. You may think you have a better deal than Joe or Sam, but maybe they have a better policy in the details.
I recall with my Chevy, for example - replacement cost coverage for the first x years (I can't recall the number now but it blew me away) Others thought they had a good deal but when the details were brought out, mine was better even if it had cost a bit more.

Some states are going to see a very large price advantage over covering the same vehicle for the same limits and deductibles due to the risk the company is taking. Or if a company is forced to cover certain things for 0 deductible like windshields, your policy will cost more. You believe "hey, I have full glass coverage" -yeah, but you pay for that. Nothing is free and no government can force any company to cover something without allowing it to be paid for in some way.

Another ways one company can save over another is where they are headquartered and incorporated, as well as where the bulk of their customers are. If most are in FL or CA, then their costs will be higher so their premiums likely higher for you.

IF a company appeals more to a certain age group and so on, their costs will vary.

I’m currently insured with All State. My rate will go up next month so I began to shop around and so far GEICO is my best option, I’m waiting to see their price for my 17’ 3000 lbs travel trailer.
State Farm will not insure my 2021 Willys eco diesel Gladiator!!
No reason was provided.
What is the over riding fear of a Jeep Gladiator that makes State Farm wet their pants and cry like a little girl?
I found the Gladiator auto insurance to be lower than most regular boring sedans. Even though pickup trucks are overall more expensive to buy, pickups are in less accidents, sustain less damage, and there are typically less frivolous pickup claims. I suspect another reason due to family ages or driving history. Geico and the General accept most people who get denied.

State Farm credit is a larger factor, selling for them in the past in 2006 to 2013 across the country. Sorry but that’s prob why

Funny….how insurance is mandated by law yet companies refuse to provide services despite law mandates. There are several instances where this exists. Home insurance has its own box of worms as well as health insurance. I am willing to bet it wont be the auto manufacturers that make certain vehicle types go extinct but rather insurance crazy rates and unwillingness to provide options
Florida is hell for all kinds of insurance.!

I tried to get away from Allstate due to rising costs but I got too many windshields for Progressive to write me

I am 66 and have a 22 gladiator, State Farm handles all my needs from the house and shop to my old 1989 Suzuki Sidekick. Haven't had an accident since the 1990's sometime. I don't have a credit rating anymore since we have been very fortunate to not need it.

Another thing that effects your insurance is your credit rating.

I didn't read through all the replies but State Farm has recently announced it won't underwrite any new policies in California for homeowners' and possible auto.

That being said I have them and love their service. Their pricing is competitive. We also have 4 vehicles and a homeowner's policy with upgrades so we're getting tons of discounts.

I wouldn't go back on Progressive on a bet. I had a miserable experience with them and had to get the state insurance commissioner's office involved. GEICO was okay but pricey at the time.

I’ve been with State Farm for 40 years. I have no comparison available to other insurance companies, but State Farm has always done right by me.

As an interesting side note, I recently had a sit down with my agent to ensure I was doing what I needed to be doing to ensure that all my “add-ons” would be covered in the event of a total loss. I explained all of the things I’ve added/modified (and that’s tens of thousands of dollars) and was asking if I needed a rider or to insure as an RV or whatever. She told me that as long as I can provide a receipt and pictures of the installed items, that I would be covered for the full value of the receipts I could provide. I reiterated to her exactly how much money we were talking about, and showed her the spreadsheet, and she maintained her position. I was honestly surprised by that answer.

The only “catch”, if you can even call it one, is that I am out my personal labor. However, labor associated with a third party installation would be reimbursed as long as it was on the receipt.

Hopefully, I’ll never have to find out if she is incorrect in her interpretation of State Farm’s actual reimbursement policy; but I suppose time will tell.

Yeah, my son moved there from Iowa (after a stint in Korea again) and we compared notes after my wife said hey, maybe we could move to Florida.......... uh, no. Can't afford the insurance costs.
Since Iowa dropped income tax on retirement income, IRAs, etc. I think we'll stay put. Not perfect, but insurance rates aren't too bad here. (in part because of the much lower risk of claims here)
