There is nothing in that article that is news to anyone here or who has been paying attention to the market.

If you remember over the last 2 years virtually all the American executives were either forced to retire or left. i.e. the Stelantis BOD doesn't have a clue about the American market. The market that was making Stelantis profitable.

Why they gave Tovaris bonuses is beyond me. They were definitely working on behalf of their stockholders...
QFT.

Stellantis has zero idea how to work the North American markets and it shows - first by the brain drain and later by the lineup changes.

Not only NA market. Killed AU market to. Instantly terminated success story by deleting CRD in an ONLY CRD market.

JL 2.2 CRD successful to until unilateral CRD delete from Jeep CEO mr Manure.

From healthy profitable business to smouldering commercial wasteland overnight. Applause 👏

Meanwhile, GM still has the 3.0L Duramax. Getting rid of the 3.0L EcoDiesel hurt both Jeep and Ram.

Seems to me Stelantis made a mistake thinking that interest rates would stay low and the economy would keep humming along. That and the numerous “safety and emissions” requirements put on vehicles left them and most other vehicles overpriced for current market conditions.

Hopefully they will be able to survive until market conditions improve. If not someone will pick up the pieces and carry on making Jeeps.

The emissions recalls (or whatever they were) aside, I still think had Stellantis not happened, the EcoDiesel would still be an available option. Instead, Stellantis bean counters killed it.

Face it: The gladiator is $30k range vehicle. Yep-- even the Mohave and Rubicon.

The engine-- a V6 with no V8 option-- was designed and produced in the Obama administration. A Dana 44 was first manufactured in the 40s. I can't point to anything on my Jeep that looks like a lots of costs were sunk into it. Halogen headlights, plastic bumpers/fenders. It's current used value really does reflect it's worth. It's an underpowered, basic truck without many amenities that has poor power, poor fuel economy, and rides like crap. There certainly weren't a lot of materials cost put into the rear sway bar brackets, or the sun visors. No power sliding window. No trick tailgate, no scene lighting. Nothing special.

The more I look at my Jeep the more annoyed I am by Stellantis. They were tripping over themselves trying to screw people with markups and bloated MSRPs, and now these chickens are coming home to roost. My gladiator is paid off, but if someone T-boned me tomorrow, there's no way I'd rush out to replace it with another one. I wouldn't give Stellantis a dime. I sighed back in 2020 about settling on another pentastar, and to think someone would accept that in 2025 is bonkers.

Nissan frontiers start in the low 30s with pro4X's in the low 40s. I have a gladiator, and the quality appears similar. The Nissan is more powerful, but you'd be hard pressed to find a engine less powerful than the pentastar in 2024.

LOL - hardly, with other vehicles less capable costing more. Get something else as well equipped and capable for that range.
Taco starts about 33K, mid-50s for the limited, and goes up into the mid-60s from there.
So how is Jeep Gladiator over-priced for what it does?

And the gladiator starts at $37k, cheaper than a comparable Nissan. And we all know at this point you can get $10-20k off the msrp on a gladiator. I'll take my $50k loaded mojave over a $45k pro-4x any day of the week. Looking at a 2wd standard cab frontier as comparable is too much of a stretch to even pretend they start in the low $30's.

I'll let my good friend, the free market, help assist here-- if it was priced well, it would sell well. On top of a glut of lease returns hitting the used market, the boom times of Covid and people paying ludicrous amounts for mediocre vehicles is grinding to a halt. The sprint to short term profits by exploding the average transaction cost are seeing the entirely predictable consequences.

  • 2021: 89,712 units sold

  • 2022: 77,855 units sold

  • 2023: 55,187 units sold

  • 2024: 32,673 units sold through the third quarter

People buying non-fuel efficient expensive suvs and trucks at near double digit interest rates is down across the industry. People are buying econoboxes, unsurprisingly.

A symptom of the disease, below. 100k- starting. And you still get Dana 44s!
