I just replaced both batteries and ensured negative terminal was unfilled over ten minutes. Start the darn thing to a Christmas tree of error lights and this message?

Any thoughts on what I screwed up?

some cables touched each other that shouldn't have. Disconnect everything and protect any bare conductors to prevent arcing.

Happened to me after my negative cable got detached from battery. Re-connected cable to terminal and Jeep still wouldn't start. Dealership replaced the master fuse (or 'main fuse'?) in the fuse box and all was well again.

Would it be possible to keep the jeep energized through the Cig lighter while replacing the batteries. Being very careful not to short anything out.

There is nothing that gets lost that needs to be updated after a power loss. The head unit can take up to 24 hours to fully recover after a power loss.

If you want to keep the system hot, just replace one battery aa a time. Be very careful with the cables. An accidental short will blow the high current fuse.

The 12v port in the cab is not direct to the electrical system. It is controlled and is shut down with the ignition. It can be done using an adapter plugged into the 7-pin tow connector.
