Problem is we are a net exporter. Our lifting costs are so high it's cheaper to import oil for our own use than buy "our" own. The oil companies own it, not the US. That Middle East oil will continue to come here and we will continue to spend blood and treasure to "stabilize" it until we no longer need it.

I dont get how they came up with that figure. I use .31 kWh/mile in my tesla which works out to around $4.70/100mi with NV electric rate or $7.50/100mi with CA electric rate.

Yes. I track MPG's and eMPG's on all my vehicles. The Tesla goes about 240 miles on a full battery(75kWh). Which comes out to 0.31 kWh per mile.

On the other hand, my JT gets around 16mpg. With gas prices at $4/gallon, that equates to over $24/100miles. A little absurd to even compare it with the Tesla's $4.70/100miles.

It can get nasty cold in parts of CA, especially the mountain areas. Ever watch that show years back - Holy Moly ?
Ever see them in heavy jackets or coats, shivering? That's videoed in California.

True, we hardly use any electric keeping our house warm over the winter, but we have ~4 months a year that the temperature barely drops below 80*, and that's only just shortly before daybreak. You can bet your azz we're running the AC nonstop during those months.

I don't have batteries. We are on NEM 2...net metering. I export massive amounts during the day...especially when EV not charging. 1:1 credit based on time of use. There is enough excess to cover 100% of my ' no sun ' and nighttime use. Grandfathered till 2041.

Here's the other day.....no EV charging that day. All that export I get as credits.

OK, just consider me saying DUH to myself, totally discounting that option or methodology.

Back to the battery thing - we'd have to purchase a whole-house generator OR solar with batteries, and have a battery bank to go with the generator because we've found over and over "don't run a modern heat pump system on gas powered generators" - dirty power, inconsistent, etc. - all of the vendors seem to say that we'd need a bank of batteries, charge the batteries either via solar (when the sun actually shines) or generator and use quality inverter to power the HVAC system. These are extremely sensitive - so for us, if we bothered spending the money on any type of system, it would need to cover both needs including:
Power outages, sometimes lasting more than a couple of days,

My Samsung panels were built in Memphis and have a 20 year warranty. Quality panels are normally good for 25+ years. I have 28 panels and have not seen any fail (including through heavy hail).

My inverter was built in Germany and had a 10 year warranty (and was replaced once under warranty).

I installed everything. I wouldn't do another roof install, but rather a tilting rack.

Problem with net metering is when power goes out, your power goes out as well.

When you price out a battery bank, you'll see what I mean about cost. When I get settled later this year, I'll be shopping for a propane generator to get through blackouts... probably a Generac.

We're told, by multiple vendors, can't run our HVAC on a generator without cleaning up the power. That's the big reason I went with a portable gas model, no use spending for a huge generator if it can't run the HVAC in the winter.

Problem with net metering is when power goes out, your power goes out as well.

Which just seems wrong since YOU are generating and supplying the power - but can't use it......

My garage is all converted now. My wood shop is next as each light fails. My wife's quilting and sewing area lights are from about 1980 or so. Those are absolutely going to LED as they fail.
I want to go beyond just the "tubes" and get rid of the ballasts completely. I'm getting too old to mess with the troffers in the ceiling. Heavy and clunky.
I pulled the last of the old style lights out of my garage when the stairs were redone and they went into the trash.

The ones I used simply bypassed the ballasts.

? Holy smokes man! Here in Florida my annual power bill is only ~$2k, and between me and my wife we only burn ~$2500‐$3000 annually in gas at the very most. And that's with me driving my JTR 20 miles each way to/from work. It would take a LONG LONG time to recoup the costs of going solar & EV..... if we EVER did!

Sounds to me like your state has created the situation you're in.

Must be nice, in our part of Florida I'm at 700 bucks a month summer 360 a month in winter. Duke energy can suck my 8@115
