I have a bone stock High Altitude 3.0 eco diesel and, just before thanksgiving, I fell victim to the disaster that is known as the Washington DC beltway (495). I was rear ended while slowing for another accident up ahead when the kid in the civic behind me did not.

I was pleasantly surprised at the damage, or lack there of, that was inflicted on my jeep with only a plastic bumper while the Civic was totaled.

glad you are ok!

Jeeps are notorious for making carnage of cars when they come together. Even better, they have among the lowest injury claim rates of any vehicle on US roads.

Didn’t say I was ok… unfortunately my back and neck are on fire and I hit my head on the roll bar. I’ll be installing seat drop brackets to avoid hitting my head in the future

Wow. The factory bumpers on these aren't half bad. Even the plastic cover held up ok. Are you going with another stock type rear bumper? I wonder if aftermarket would have held up so well.
We’ll find out. I’m replacing both bumper with steel Rugged Ridge so there’s even less damage the next time some kid isn’t paying attention

And the Grand Cherokee is even better yet at passenger protection. I've seen those flipped or the front ends crushed from hitting embankments and yet behind the radiator area was not ripped apart and the cabin area was fully intact.

One reason I like Jeep so well is what I've seen of them after accidents (first-hand, not just anecdotal stuff) Jeeps do well and they've had years to make this style of body and frame safe.

The car that hit the OP sort of reminds me of the Ford that hit my son's Eagle. Knocked a tiny piece of trim off his bumper, NO other damage and I had the trim in one of my tubs of spare parts while the little car had to be towed away. I suspect it was totaled. The front was crushed a lot like the one above.

They had to be tooling along and totally ignoring what was in front of them - distracted is my bet.
YOU get YOU checked out..........

495 and 695 are awful. The speed limit is 55 most of the way, with speed cameras in the construction zones. So I try to keep it under 60. But you always have some *** switching lanes, not paying attention, and going like 80-85, even though there's guaranteed to be a beltway traffic jam, either from construction or from the last accident just around the corner.

All this is true. I roll on 495 daily, from McLean around to Springfield. The dumbest drivers in the Western Hemisphere seem to come from this area…

Man right? I busted out laughing when I saw that picture. Poor kid, hopefully he learns from this and gives room between him and the vehicle in front of him.
From the damage, doubt it was a lack of space but more like a lack of smarts and an abundance of not paying attention. That took some speed and maybe the cops will find he didn't apply brakes.
Too many fools fiddling with dials and knobs, reading, messing with the phone or talking to their BFF on the phone and not DRIVING.
This one won't learn, that's my bet. He'll believe he did nothing wrong.

Ya, the DC beltway does not suffer shitty situational awareness or lack of attention. This is why I put the phone in the console.

Had the same thing happen the other day a lady rear-ended my black JTRD and she ate both tail hooks, but never reached the Genright bumper, it is tucked up tight and the tail hooks stick out about 5 inches. She wasnt happy, and I said well maybe next time you should stop. Think she hit me doing about 5-10 mph. PS I have a stock read steel bumper in my garage. between my 2012 JKUR and JTRD I have been rear-ended 3 times, one totaled a Honda fit one totaled a Honda crv and the Honda accord got broken plastic bumper and trim pieces
