Took my elderly father to Big Bend two years ago in my JT. It still had paper plates at the time of the trip. . We did the badge of honor trail “Black Gap”. I let him drive. We had the doors off, top off and got dusty as hell. Everything was covered in dust inside the Jeep. I never seen him smile so hard in his entire life.

Took a family trip to Durango/Ouray/Silverton from our home in Houston when I was 22 years old in 1999. First time I had ever seen mountains. The rest of the family did some sightseeing around Ouray, shopping and touristy stuff and whatnot. I got my dad to rent me a TJ from one of the rental places and no one would go exploring the mountains with me except for my 13 year old brother.

We got up on some trails in the mountains, saw old mining towns, took the top down on the Jeep, got up so high in the mountains that we found snow in the middle of summer and had a snowball fight. Got scared a few times like we were going to fall of the edge of the trail, but generally had a freaking awesome time.

Came back down, turned the Jeep back in to the rental place and told everyone how fun it was. All the other cousins were so jealous because all they did was walk and shop all day.

It was about a half a year later, I bought my first Jeep, a steel blue TJ Wrangler X.

This one goes way back. I was 16 in 1983. I drove a CJ7. I would visit my first girlfriend and drive home late at night from her house. Its was summer but always really cool going to my house out in the country.

The top and doors were always off and I never wore a jacket. I'd drive home in the cold dark, with Van Halen, Rush, Judas Priest or the like, cranked on the radio. Wind in my hair... Freezing to death. But I had just had a goodnight kiss and I was in teenage heaven.

This is my first Jeep, but my favorite memory so far was taking Imogene Pass from Ouray to Telluride with my wife and daughters.

It was just so beautiful and everyone loved it. We stopped for pictures and to look at the scenery. The weather was good enough to have the windows down most of the time.

I kept saying to myself, “THIS is why we got a Jeep.”

I've told this story here before, but I'll share it again:

Living in Germany, and I had a JKU at the time. Went out for a drive through the Schwarzwald (Black Forrest) on drive topless day. Beautiful day out, and I was thoroughly enjoying the drive. Saw a euro-spec Wrangler driving towards me (they are very rare over there, as they are priced like luxury vehicles, and with the gas prices, not many owned them). This other Wrangler also had the top down, and the driver was very enthusiastically waving with both hands out the top of the Jeep with a huge grin on his face.

I waved back (only one hand, as at least one of us should have a hand on the steering wheel on a winding forrest road). To this day I am convinced that I was his first Jeep wave.

I was driving down a 6 lane highway through Auburndale Florida during a storm in my 88 XJ.
Up ahead I saw a bunch of cars swerving to avoid something. It turned out to be a small tornado crossing the road.
I was young and crazy at the time, so I said to myself "What the hell, I'm in a jeep! It'll handle it!" so I drove right through it. It twisted me one way on the way in, calmed down a little, then twisted me the other way on the way out. It was kind of fun. Would do again, five stars!

Peacekeeping mission in Sinai in the 80's we had M151 Mutt Jeeps. Also W Germany and Yakima Firing Center, all M151's. This is why I like to bag on heavy modified Jeeps. You couldn't imagine where we took these things with those tires, that clearance, not to mention independent suspension, and that engine.

Back in the mid 70's. Tommy had a CJ5. When he haul stuff. He would remove the rear seat. He never bolted it down. One Saturday night, he picks me up and we go cruising. Living in a small college town. It was easy to pick up girls. After a few beers at a local bar. A couple of girls hit on us. So after talking to them. They wanted to go for a ride in the Jeep. Tommy is driving with a girl in shotgun. I'm in the back with the other girl. Tommy asks if the girls wanted to go 4wheeling. They said yea. So.....off we go to a local trail. On this trail. There is a step section where you get part way up then gas it to make it over the top. He did it. Forgot about the rear seat not being bolted down. When the jeep landed, the rear seat threw me and the girl up in the air. She smack her head on the roll bar, and her knee landed into my ribs. Trip to the hospital. She got a concussion, and me 2 broken ribs. Still laugh about to this day.

Gramps long drive in a creek then winching up the bank, took 3 grabs. He feared nothing. When I was a punk kid mom would drop me off at Gramps for a week or two during the summer. He had a 5th or 6th grade education, but to me he was the smartest man alive. Salt of the earth.
