What do you prefer and why. Lets read all about it.
Is one more durable then the other?
A 1K upcharge is kinda high for just paint ( even on top of the Rubicon cost )

When I was looking for my silver JTR I specifically picked the black flares and top. I love the contrast as Gregj stated. I would dig a black painted top and flares too if I would have seen one. Probably wouldn't pay significantly more for it though. With my Black Rhino wheels, black tonneau, Line X'd steel bumpers and rock rails, antenna, top and fender flares. Even the little red Rubicon accents on the lettering... it really does Pop.

I preferred the painted topand fenders for a couple of reasons. One I prefer the look. Two, if you don’t get the painted ones from the factory, it would be hell to get them later if you decided you wanted them. You can’t just buy them, and if you could, they might not match well if not painted at the same time as your truck at the factory. Different batches of paint can vary enough to be detectable to the naked eye, even when they’re supposed to be the same hue. The black top and fenders, on the other hand, can easily be bought later and added, or traded for if you decide you like that look. They’re pretty frequently on the forums here, and you can also buy from Mopar anytime. Anyway, just an opinion, individual mileage may vary ;)

I'm about to place an order for a Hydro Blue JTR and plan to get black fenders with the painted roof. My thought is that the fenders are likely to get damaged at some point and the black ones would be easier to source or I could always go aftermarket.

I've been bouncing back and forth on the painted roof. It looks so good in blue, I'm just worried about damage.

Also, the painted tops are more of a chore to clean as opposed to the black textured. Your going to have to treat the painted top as you would the painted sections when cleaning (clay/wax/ceramic). The black hardtop, i just wash it, spray 303 and call it a day.

I agree with @DeezJT. Mine came with painted top. My wife's JLU has the black textured. The painted top is much more susceptible to scratches on the trail. And if you take the top on and off regularly (or even just the freedom panels) you have to be more careful with the painted top. One of the reasons I keep the sunrider on all the time is because I was scared of damaging the freedom panels when removing/ storing them.

That's what I'm afraid of but I can't get over how good the painted top looks with Blue.

Depends on what you are going to do with it. I go out on trails often and there is quite a bit of evidence of trail rash on the black top. Having a colored top is aesthetically pleasing but..... you are going to spend a ton of time buffing out those pinstripes! I do enough of that on the body and Fenders!

@HorneyBadger Right?! I love the painted fenders but I'm surprised you don't see diamond plate (or even vinyl) protection for them like the old Defender 90s. I'm always setting beers and tools down on the front fenders and I know I'll scratch them up eventually

I have chosen the black (non paint matched) hard top for my jeeps. I remove and replace the top frequently when weather permits. Often 1-2 times per week from May to Oct.
I didn't want to be concerned with possibly chipping paint.

To me it depends on if you 4 wheel with your truck at all.
If you do expect trail pinstripes or worse. With the painted top not going to look to good.
With the textured black top you won't see the pinstripes as much.

So a painted hardtop is completely smooth? Good info.
