I'd like to head north, but I also think it needs to be a post retirement trip. Don't think work would like it if I took 2 or 3 months off.
I got between 8 and 10 yrs left. Maybe we need to plan to drag Chris along with both of us. I got most of the skills needed and he's got the tools. You got the booze to keep us warm at night?

It would be neat to have a caravan of 3 - 4 rigs headed to the Arctic Circle. My goal is to take an off-road camper all the way to Prudhoe Bay.

I don't drink anything with alcohol, but I can bring the ribeye steaks.

First off.

Arctic Circle sounds like a great trip.

I flew into Anchorage and drove one of my Uncle's pickups home. Was a blast, wish I'd of had a bit more time.

I'd love to head back that way. Dalton Hwy is definitely on my bucket list.


My in-laws and another couple pulled travel trailers to dead horse. I believe between the 2 setups, they had 3 flats, 1 broken canopy window and the U-bolts on 1 side of one of the camp trailers broke. Found parts in dead horse and had some welding done. All heading north, the trip back south on the Dalton was uneventful. Made for some good stories.
I can't wait for my turn. A group would be fun.

I've always wanted to run the Dalton to Prudhoe. A friend who lives in Palmer AK just hit it with his Safari based camper. Atigun had snow, he said it was "interesting." He also said the Arctic Ocean was 45, the air temp was 45 and he was cold getting in and out.

But yes, in a few years I'll be down for a group ride but it's gonna be about 10-12K miles round trip.

3ish from here, about 2000 miles.
With the diesel, I could probably do an AK trip without needing to change my oil. Granted, I live less than 6hrs from a North border crossing.

Pick a store that recycles the oil so disposal would be easy.

Sabbatical Hello

My wife and I have always worked a 9-month contract. We have June and July off every year which is nice for traveling, etc. Otherwise, I'd be looking at a Sabbatical or simply taking time off in-between jobs.

Very seldom do I praise the younger generation, but one thing I like about the younger generation is their refusal to be slaves in the workplace. They aren't scared to take time off, quit a job, or go do something different. Now, obviously, that can potentially become problematic if they aren't preparing for retirement, etc., but I can't fault those who find ways to work smarter not harder.

I was a slave to the business many years, but in my new position I feel like it's less so. I have a lot more flexibility in this spot - can pop out early for an appointment or in late without worrying about time cards or vacation, just keep my phone on me and take a call if one comes if I can.

If I'm sick or the ole lady needs help around the house, I can work from home for a day or two without fuss.

Four weeks vacation a year, but I can stretch that through various means.

Hah. That probably sounds normal to a lot of people and here I am looking at it like an employment benefit. I came up through harsh times. lol.

I wouldn't have my hopes up that my work would approve me disappearing for a couple months, but I don't think it's impossible, or at the least, I feel like my boss would try to find a way I could make it work, even if that meant checking in via Starlink and doing a little work from the road

I need to go to school and maybe get a bachelors in sales or business. Something. I'm reluctant to believe my job outlook elsewhere is amazing without having folks on the inside.

Dale Carnegies book points out that most employment progress is made via relationships and who you know, not necessarily what you know all of the time.

Anyway. I digress. De-railing this thread hard.

ALCAN 5000 Rally anyone?

A friend about 30 years ago decided to do the ALCAN 5K after he got out of the Air Force. Only problem is, he lived in Connecticut. Well, larger problem: His car at the time was a nearly 100K mile Saab 900 Turbo.

He drove it cross country (and at a blindingly high rate of speed) to cross at Vancouver, then ran all the way up the ALCAN without a single issue until he got to the end near Fairbanks (IIRC). On a Saturday evening, sun setting his Saab decided it was time for the alternator to go 10-7 tits up.

On the side of the road for about an hour a few miles outside of the middle of nowhere, a tow truck happens to roll by. Tow driver says he may have the part at the shop and can tow him in. Convenient since the temps were dropping fast after sunset. Ray said he wasn't sure if the guy was legit or if he'd end up in a bathtub in a motel missing an organ or three but it beat freezing on the side of the road.

Said driver tows Ray and the 900 to his shop. Ray said his jaw hit the floor when they arrived. Turns out he's the ONLY Saab certified mechanic for hundreds of miles, and he's got a stockpile of NOS parts and donor cars out back.

New alternator, oil change, tire rotation and Ray was back in action. He then drove the Saab back the same way he came all the way to Connecticut. Something like 18K miles in total.

So, again, anyone wanna do the ALCAN in 2028?
