Hey guys, lifted rubicon on 40s regeared to 5.13s

I’m getting a loud whine in both 4wd and 2wd. Sounds like it’s coming from under the center of the truck. I just replaced the driveline thinking it might be a CV or carrier bearing. Still getting the loud whine..

I tried putting it in neutral and coasting to see if I could isolate it. Still getting the noise. That leads me to believe it’s not the transmission.

Any Ideas?

How long ago was the regear done?

Does not leave a lot left if you are certain it is not the actual differential gears leaving the transfer case as suspect.

Out of warranty?
Even if he is still in warranty, rolling in on 40's and have a regear already done is not going to help him try to have them look at it and warranty anything drivetrain related.

Are the gears Yukon? Yukon’s are very noisy these days, quality isn’t there anymore.

Not sure your miles- but maybe flush the trans fluid early and send a fluid sample for analysis…..

Transfer case is easy to flush as well… send both out and see what they see.

could also change the pitch of the noise- so do one at a time for isolation?

Are you confident the gears were set up correctly? An incorrect setup can cause such noises sometimes. Could also be a rough set of gears. Not sure why ring and pinions come from factory so rough these days. It isnt necessarily an indicator of poor quality but its problematic for sure.

It’s always had a slight whine since being regeared.. It’s now 10x as loud and all the time. The weird thing is it sounds like it’s coming from the center of the truck..

can’t remember what gears they used… not happy with the shop that did it anyway. They forgot to put in bumpstops after installing the lift, didn’t grease anything etc..

Put it on a rack or jack-stands and run it to see if you can still hear the noise. Some times noises go away when the components aren’t under load, so this might not help. If you still hear it, see if you can localize it with a stethoscope or a hose held between your ear and each component.

And be prepares to hear rattles and whines that have nothing to do with your problem. That’s called “rack rattle” and is built in just to increase your enjoyment of drivetrain diagnostics. ?‍?

Did you break in the new gears correctly? It's a big deal when it comes to differentials and a long life. Have you checked the temperture of the rear diff after driving it for a while? It may tell you if there is a problem or not. If both front and rear diff's were set up incorrectly, it may be that they are both making noise and thus sound or whine appears to be coming from under the center of the truck. Hard to say here but if it was me, I would have the rear diff opened up and inspected, but not by the guys who set up your regear. I have had enough diffs setup to know that there are a lot of cowboys (no offense to cowboys here as I'm one of them) out there who are not skilled at setting up gears correctly. Just because they are in business doesn't mean they are good at it. Take it to a shop you trust and have them take a look at the setup. That is about your only option here I see. Good luck to you.
