My brother rents a house up past Corolla on the beach every fall. Takes about 30 minutes of beach driving to get to it. Been going there for years. Can't to get back there.
Carova is about as perfect as it gets. I love it there. I really need to go back. Assateague Island is my somewhat regular. Off season on the OSV is spectacular, too. Highly recommend it.

I camped one November on AI when I was younger to see the Pleiades meteor shower and it did not disappoint. Waking up at 6am to pee in the freezing coldt, I opened my tent to stare in the face of a local of the equine variety who was just as surprised as I was. Good times.

When we had the camper, later motor homes. We stayed at Castaway RV park (think it's Sundowner now). We took a lot of side trips over to Assateague. Good times.

Ocracoke is on my bucket list!! Worth the trip?
Way back in the day, OBX as a whole had a small beach town vibe. It was desolate and beautiful. Over the years it’s gotten so built up and touristy, it’s a little overwhelming. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still fun to rent a beach house in Nags Head for a few weeks. But if you are looking for something quieter you’ve got to head south, at least to Hatteras. It’s still mostly Surfers and Fishermen other than folks driving down to see the lighthouse. But, I’ve reached the point where if I’m driving down to HI I might as well take the ferry to Ocracoke. OI is even quieter. People drive around the tiny town at the southern end in golf carts. There’s only a few restaurants/bars, the grocery store is decent and there’s an ice cream place. It’s not totally desolate. There’s a nice surf shop and a small hotel and rental houses, but it’s all low key. There is a vet on the island but I don’t know their availability. There’s no Super Wings, or Lowe’s, or Walmart or Mini Golf, thank God. All of that is on the southern end. Almost the entire island is National Park. You can buy a ORV permit for the whole island along with camping reservations on recreation.gov. Unfortunately you can’t camp on the beach. If I could, I’d stay for weeks. The federal campground is nice though. It’s got cold showers but at least showers and bathrooms that are cleaned daily. The camp hosts are nice. People are pretty chill. You cant have firearms in the campground and outside of the town, no drones. You’re not supposed to have dogs off leash, but I let Donut run around in the surf and play frisbee and keep an eye on him. The big concern is the wetlands between the beach and the roadway and certain closed off portions of the beach. It’s a major sea turtle nesting ground and the marshes is an important bird habitat, which is why there’s the dog restrictions. You’ll have plenty of room on the beach for yourself. If you’re looking for the best fishing possible than you should stick with Hatteras although the point on HI is where the best fishing is and that gets crowded sometimes 3 people deep standing at the shore. There’s a lot of etiquette involved in all of that too. That’s not my thing, so I’ll trade the best fishing for more privacy and space.

I think OI is really special, but if you want something even more remote where you can camp on the beach you can charter a private boat from the mainland to Cape Lookout even farther south. With any of these places do a lot of research before hand, for beach closures, hurricane damage, etc. Last time I was in OI, the ocean was encroaching on the roadway, significantly closer than the previous year. I remember not too long ago when you didn’t have to take the sound side bridge around to Rodanthe. I don’t think more southern islands are going to be as easily accessible much longer. Also, don’t discount the off season. You’re not going to go swimming in November or January, but it’s beautiful then too.

Old picture on the beach in Delaware, have a newly made rod rack on front now but too busy fishing to take pictures!….Jack
Which DE Beach? Been going to Bethany/Fenwick for 20+ years and was hoping to take the Gladiator on the beach when we were there a few weeks ago....but never quite got to it. Didn't have the fishing permit and too lazy to let air out of the tires. From PA and trying to figure out a few day trips in the fall to hit some beaches.

Great rig! What's your cap?

This is the 3rd Jeep and 3rd generation of Jeep I’ve had with one, but the pre filter and driver side mount is new to me. It’s definitely louder and it makes a vacuum cleaner wooshing sound with the window open. With the windows closed or with everything open on the interstate you don’t notice it. Around town with everything open you do but you get used to it and forget it’s there. It’s definitely not stealthy though. I’ve truly needed a snorkel for water exactly one time on my TJ with water up to the top of the hood. I don’t intend to drive this Jeep underwater but then again I never have with any Jeep so it’s mostly insurance for water crossings and flooding. Thankfully no one’s posting pictures of themselves driving their Jeeps through the surf. I see stuff corroding on my Jeep just from spending time near the water in OI. The valve on my new Worthington aluminum propane tank looks like a 4th season Grand Cayman rental scuba tank.

The big difference I’ve seen running a snorkel on all my Jeeps is that the air filter stays way way cleaner especially when driving on dusty fire roads. I wouldn’t drive the MABDR in Pennsylvania in a convoy and especially not out west in BLM land without one.
I had the Rugged Ridge snorkel for my gas JL and loved the look and how it integrates without hood modification. The quality in the snorkel itself was not the best honestly. I had to waterproof everything to make it actually water tight.

Now having diesel JT, the only option is this AEV snorkel that looks like a huge afterthought on the side of a Jeep.

How is the quality of the parts and is it actually waterproof?
Is there a bracket that attaches the vertical part to the A-pillar?

New Jeeper....here....just got our Gladiator about a month ago......2023 Sport....having a blast with it and trying to learn as much as we can about the Jeep lifestyle! All of these pics are friggen awesome..... In eastern PA, so need to figure out what NJ, DE or MD beaches are the easiest to get access to without all kinds of permitting hoops. Thanks to all for posting these pics! It helps alot with learning and motivation!

I think a Forum meet in Carova would be kick ass.

Back in my Chevy Colorado days we used to do meets, camp outs and cabins all the time.

Since there is so many OBX'ers here, maybe we should think about doing something like that? Who would be interested? Guys trip?

Trial run of my offset awning on Ormond Beach FL. Wife didn't like it so it is back to the beach umbrella for her.

Any info on that awning? Looking to make something similar and thats the closest to what I had envisioned.
