Update for my earlier post stating I use 93........... for the last week I have used no Octane gas.......
as in, I live in NC and I can't find no damn gas ANYWHERE!!!!! 87,91, 93 or 94!!!!!
HELP.........please send any octane rated gas to NC!!!!!

Currently running 91, as it is recommended by magnuson. after installing the supercharger, that is the only thing i have been running and the wallet feels it. but eh i like the performance so far.

I have two vehicles - a VW Golf and the Gladiator. The JT is much newer. When we bought it I decided to put 87 in it (following manufacturer recommendations). In the Golf we put in 85 (but yes, it also is recommended to use 87, and we ignore that).

I agree with you I've never had a problem with 85. But there is a decent amount of literature out there saying that modern vehicles do not benefit from the 85 rule. Again - I do use 85. I'm just pointing out that the manufacturers and the EPA say to use 87.

I’m at 6,700’ here in Colorado Springs and the 3.6L pings in both my JLR manual and JTR auto with 85 at low RPM driving up my driveway. I use 87 when in town and 85 when I’m heading out on hwy.

I do know what my mechanic and a couple others have told me, and solved an issue in my 08 wrangler. In my case, I was told it's not the octane, but the detergents.
The people who told you this are behind the times. When leaded gas went away, oil companies started promoting their premium gasoline as a way to keep engines clean because it had detergents. The federal government quickly nipped that in the bud and required all their gasoline to contain the same detergents. Additive packages do vary between gasoline brands, but premium gasoline has higher octane and that's all. No other benefit; and as we've discussed, if you're not detonating/pinging, you don't need the higher octane.

Yeah, you'd better as you are raising the compression ratio when that thing is pushing air in. If it's stock compression was 11:1 (JUST FOR A NUMBER folks, don't get too picky) then when forcing air in you are well above that. I'm sure those guys - even those who install them professionally, know what the new static ratio is at various boost levels.

Patently false. It’s 10.2:1. Up from 9.6:1.

General rule of thumb is 9.3:1 and below for 87. Jeep got this one wrong. Which is why the new 3.6s ping so much.
Its also an all-aluminum engine. Cast iron rule-of-thumb go out the window with all-aluminium

Mine has never pinged and I live where it gets up to 120°

Add to that things that engineers have learned and do differently now than they did even 25 years ago. Back to the LS again - engineers put in steam reliefs in the heads to prevent hot spots - and reduce - you guesses it - ping. When there's a hot spot and the coolant in a small spot "boils" then there's no coolant in that spot to extract heat and it prevents liquid from even getting to that spot. The engineers devised ways to release that steam bubble and allow coolant to that spot. They also did other things like lower the thermostat location, etc.
I have to suspect that the engineers working on the 3.6 pulled a few tricks like that as well.
There are ways to shape pipes and hoses and passages that improve coolant flow, ways to prevent bubbles, chamber designs, intake designs to keep the air swirling and mixing (even with injection you want the air stirring around), it's a complicated thing.

And yes - as Lee so loved to say way back when "the rules have changed".

He was afraid his F-150 which had about 1/2 of a tank wouldn’t make it so I drove down with my Gladiator which has the additional 17 gallon LRA fuel tank and we swapped vehicles for the month. He made it fine and I found gas near me in VA...

Hopefully the tanks will be filling up shortly.

I read where the pipeline is running full throttle again - but still shortages. Is that because of the empty tanks at the stations and truckers and all not being able to keep up or should I say - CATCH up?
I assume this will even out for you all very soon - or hope so!
No "shortage" here but prices have skyrocketed in the last week, big jumps.

I'd love to ride in a JT that wasn't naturally aspirated and see what the difference is.
So far i like the mag a lot. especially with towing, it gets the weight moving quickly the low end torque is awesome in my opinion.

That's the reason I would have for such a thing. I have the 3.73 ratio so low end torque would be a help, and on hills. Maybe I need to find out more. Thanks.

I topped off my half full 87 tank with 91 and the pre-detonation that was reliably there basically disappeared. And this sort of strained sound the engine would make at high speeds was suddenly just smooth sounding. The wife noticed both without me telling her I had used 91. I almost exclusively use the Chevron in town.

Tank was about 60% full so it would be like a net 88.6 octane.
So yours sounded smoother with the higher octane? I have used 93 last to fill ups and I feel my jeep runs smoother
