That was my question. My Tundra required so much more maintenance for the drivetrain alone than my gladiator does. And i ran my Tundra no where near as hard as i run my Mojave. My tundra was always leaking from somewhere, the electronics in charge of shifting the vehicle in and out of 4x4 worked maybe 7 out of 10 times. The list just goes on. My Mojave? fluids and tire rotations. thats it.
toyota's do leak a lot and the Toyota fanbois love to just pretend its regular maintenance. My Lexus GX460 had the 4.6L V8 that was in the 2nd Gen tundra and they were known for rear main seal leaks, the valley cover plate, cam tower leaks. The radiators in the Toyotas like to fail around 125k. Transfer case leaks.

I know. I got rid of my tundra for all those reasons cus i couldn't justify dumping 2-3k a month just to keep it road worthy. Im sitting pretty with my mojave rn but now that just means im trail ready, I got do a rear main seal on my buddy's GX460, its 2017 with only 70k on it. I got a redo a power steering rack on a GX470 i just did a month ago. there are 7 4r platform based vehicles in my group. and two of em are down at a minimum every month. and I'm the group mechanic for the most part. It's been 3 yrs since i started wheeling, and ive changed so many CVs and tierods trailside. I could do it in my sleep, upside and underwater in 20 mins. I've changed so much 5 speed auto aisin trans fluid, that i dont even need to check anything to know if its up to temp to check fluid or add, i just got a feel for it. I can swap out the electronic t case select box in under an hour, upside down. I mean the list goes on. They are good trucks but they are not robust. If i ever get a Toyota again, it'll be an imported 70 series.

As far as the competition goes, none of the competition (aside from the Frontier) has a V6 now. All of the new midsize trucks (GM Twins, Ranger, Taco) have boosted four cylinders. So, if going back in time I'd agree that the Pentastar is better than the Taco, comparable to the V6 that was in the GM twins and the Frontier (though on paper its weaker than both of those), and lagging behind the turbo motor in the Ranger. Going forward, the Gladiator is simply 'behind' all except the Frontier.
Unfortunately, the transmission behind that Nissan V6 is a hot mess. I moved from an older Nissan to the Jeep, but had planned to buy the new Frontier. Until I drove it.

That transmission was complete crap, it made my wife motion sick in a just under a mile of city driving and I was just pissed off at it.

The 2024 Ranger Raptor has a V6 with 405 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque.
That's 120hp and 170 lb-ft torque more than the JT's V6.
Good catch - I forgot about the Raptor offering with the V6. I just remembered the Ranger had the turbo four from the get go.

They are having big issues with the A760 transmissions crapping the bed too and its NOT cheap to replace them. They were on national backorder for a while.

I think Toyota's were super reliable when they had the weak ass motors in the 90's and very early 2000's, but once they started putting more power in them they started having issues just like everything else does.

I just sold my GX460 yesterday and really wasnt that upset to see it go. There is a lot more space in the garage.

The regular ranger is getting the 2.7L with 315hp/400 ft-lbs as an option. While its not a ton more powerful than the 3.6L Pentastar on paper, I can tell you it feels a lot stronger. I have had several crew cab 4x4 F150 XLT rentals with the 2.7L and they are fast and legitimately sip fuel for a full sized truck. I think I drove one for 4 days in Charlotte, everything from city streets to 65 mph freeway, and I think I averaged like 23-24 mpg in a 5200 lb full size truck.

Also, those power ratings are on 87 octane. The Ecoboosts wake up big time on 91 or 93 octane.

The Ford 2.7L is probably the best all around half ton motor out there IMHO. Its very reliable, makes really solid power/torque and is very efficient. It should be awesome in the Ranger.

Hang on-- only us BMW owners** are allowed to call topping off after endless oil leaks "regular maintenance." Stand down bud.

**Us Subaru owners can get away with calling it regular maintenance, too, but they don't leak, they just consume.

I admit I have a problem.

My wifes 2009 Legacy leaked from the valve covers. Getting the valve covers off required lifting the engine because it’s too close to the wheel wells and wouldnt lift off over the cams?‍♂

I hated that car. It was heinously slow, but still could barely crack 25mpg even though it was shaped like a missle and weighed 3100 lbs. literally my 6500 lb F150 on 35’s is almost as efficient.

Boxer engine issues. PITA to work on sometimes. Our 10+ year old, 210K+ mile Crosstrek commuter gets 30+ MPG and burns a half a quart of oil every 1500 miles like clockwork.

At least it's not made of plastic.

My 2014 Tundra was the most reliable vehicle I ever owned, but I needed the write-off in 2023 and wanted a Jeep. I'm fairly certain I downgraded in reliability.

Subarus don't just consume... you will sooner rather than later be putting in head gaskets... not a simple job on a horizontally opposed engine. Never again.

Rings, pistons, and head gaskets were done around 130K under warranty. At almost 210K and its close to but still chugging along, a half quart of oil every other week notwithstanding but when it goes 10-7 tits up, she's getting the Bronco Sport we bought last year and I'm getting my JTM.
