Yep, Illinois is such a crooked state, even more so if you live in Crook County! LOL But even in Will County it's not much better.

Yeah, Illinois is one of the most expensive states in every way possible.

Iam guessing New Hampshire has less Californians than Iowa does so in my peeing match, New Hampshire wins.

Yeah, we just get the stuff moving away from Boston and similar areas, driving up our costs on things, building mansions here, and so on. They can sell a teeny property there for a mint and build a massive place here, and they demand upscale stores and malls, putting others out of business.
Go back east to Boston - don't need the attitudes here

You can watch prices on everything climb up as you drive from southern IL up to the Chicago area - the closer you get to the Cook County and Chicago area, the more expensive -and more dangerous, it gets.
I tried to drive through IL going around the tolls and that sort of thing - the GPS took us into parts of Chicago I never want to see again..

That is so true, we live in a south western suburb of Chicago outside of Cook County, about an hour from downtown, and it's almost just as bad as Cook County on the taxes. And as the years go by the crime and problems of downtown Chicago have gotten much much worse and continue to travel further out from the city. I avoid downtown as much as I can unless we absolutely have to go for something, not worth the risk to myself or my family. It really is sad because I remember loving the city as a kid and would love going downtown, but now I don't want to get shot or car jacked.

Typically, my area is pretty low on taxes, so I'm curious as to how this compares to others.

7+ grand in Bernalillo County, NM for 3/4 acre. It's as high as California, but the cost of housing is lower.

I hang out downtown every time I'm in Chicago, never even witnessed a crime. I wouldn't hesitate to take my family there

Probably the loop, or the tourist areas where the police have a far greater presence.
Downtown areas are pretty vacant at night.

Where I drove through - I'd not go through again, and, the construction was the worst we'd ever seen in a city. Making it worse was a stop at every corner................. no way to just drive through.

Some people just can't handle urban areas and let all the propaganda terrify them.

When I worked for the Railroad we had depots where we had to drive through anacostia neighborhood in D.C. and you went allowed to go as a singular unit because workers had been shot at and injured driving down the streets. Chicago Southside, D.C. all the major cities have problems (Philadelphia) is another one.
