Why do you like or dislike Auto start stop (ESS)?

To Everyone complaining, most of the major brands have already been using this tech for years now. Just press the button, or flash the car to disable it. It’s not that big a deal.

Been browsing this site and jeep.com looking at Gladiators, sat in them a few times. Today finally, I had my first test drive, and found out the engine shuts off at every light. And it can't be permanently disabled in a supported manner. Major disappointment, FCA.

Very surprised to see a gas-only non-hybrid car having this ridiculous "feature" locked on. If you push the button to turn it off, it should stay off, not re-set itself to on. Jeep telling you that it knows better than you what you like. Another reason to keep my JK, at least for now. Maybe if they come out with a diesel Gladiator they won't have this abomination on diesel-optioned models.

Anything that is involved with government mandated controls is not going to have a button from the manufacturer to permanently disable it. I find the ESS to only be a minor annoyance. I usually disable it for around town driving, to keep the AC running cold. It just makes the startup a two button press instead of one. Nothing to get worked up over.

I don’t like it. A running engine in Houston traffic is a comfort to me and I can easily imagine a failed restart at an inopportune time. The default state should be programmable and let the button on the dash toggle it. The engineer in me cringes at all the extra stress of stop,start on the truck.

I will disagree with this. My 16 Q5 has the disable button and I don’t have to press it every Time I get in the car, so in essence it’s permanently disabled til I don’t want it to be.

Yeah I have a car where you can't disable it. I don't really care though. It doesn't bother me at all.

I think it is pretty seamless in operation. If the radio is on you don't even realize anything is happening.
I have but one gripe with the ESS. If you come to a stop, and ESS shuts you down and your intentions were to park the vehicle, there is no way to not have the engine restart when you go into park or press the ignition button.

Ask yourself honestly --> What are the real reasons Jeep FORCES us to drive with ESS?

Saving money and saving the planet right?!? LOL

1. If I wanted to save a hypothetical 10% on fuel cost, I wouldn't be driving a bloody Jeep in the first place. The additional cost from the additional wear and tear on batteries/starters/engine components, and additional cost they charge for this BS far outweighs any fuel "cost savings" on a Jeep.
2. If I really believed ESS made for a more "environmentally friendly" vehicle, I would buy that bridge in Brooklyn. Think of all the additional batteries (lead/nickel) that are going to be needed. Those batteries don't grow on trees. For the 2 seconds my engine is shut off, the "environmental friendly" impact is negligible, unless you're Al Gore, and making bank on man-made global warming scams.
3. What if one of the times your driving in a stop and go scenario(on a gridlock freeway), and after the 1 millionth start/stop, the starter says NOPE, and you get into an accident? Or, your spouse/child are out trail-riding in a remote area and it malfunctions? Is your family worth more than that?4.

And that is for a 2016 model from another manufacturer, this is for a 2020 model made in the USA.

I rented a Wrangler the other day for a work road trip, the start-stop wasn’t terribly bad Except when you reached your destination & stopped, engine would cut off. Then you shift into park & the darned thing would restart every time before you reached up & hit the ignition button to shut it down. Think of the thousands of times that would happen over the lifetime of the vehicle. Not sure how the vehicle could ‘know’ you’re about to park tho-

My wife’s Lnd Rover has it and it’s no biggy. I shut it off sometimes but others I just ignore it- Florida summer is hot and I want the cool air running full time. I don’t buy the environmental benefits and the fuel savings for most of us are negligible. I feel it’s an EPA recommended or subsidized feature for FCA. In Europe where most driving is done in small crowded cities (where owning a vehicle is not necessary in the first place) it makes sense. Here in the US most do highway driving a lot, and travel a fair distance to work- so it makes much less sense. Finally, at least we got the on off switch- my GMC Sierra has AFM and auto- deactivates 4 cylinders while driving. No choice without aftermarket.
