Organizing your off-road tool kit

I started with a zippered canvas bag from home depot to carry a few tools. Added a tool here, a tool there; when I ran out of space I added a tool roll for wrenches. Now it's too heavy and too hoarder-y.

How do you all organize your mobile tool kit? What's a reasonable upper limit on size and weight?

I’m in a huge transition. My JKU I usually carried a pack out box with a grinder, sawzaw, impact gun, wratchet, and a tekton socket set… then threw this in top:

now- we just picked up a decked system… while it’s cool…. It is complete chaos and I haven’t figured out a way to cleanly organize anything in it… it holds all of the same things as the pack out- but it’s all jumbled inside and a ton of wasted space. - I will say the boxes that go inside are probably our way forward- the big box that came with it is full of recovery gear- and I might just fill it with the boxes and organize that way.
I carry a lot of tools, and McGiver items because I end up out alone a lot… and rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Photos go a long way- once I figure out what I’m doing I’ll report back. If anyone has creative solutions, might be cool to collect them here!

I have two roll ups, a wrench roll and a tool roll. All the sockets, ratchets, extensions, screwdriver bits, and various specialty bits fit nicely in the zippered pouches on the tool roll up. I also have a set of jumper cables, a portable air compressor (no, I haven't dropped the $$ for onboard air) some recovery straps. I put all of that into a Dewalt XL box. I have a matching Dewalt XL box with all my work stuff in it, hand tools, safety harness, welding hood, etc.
Both of those sit nicely between the wheel wells against the forward wall of the bed and I have them ratchet strapped in place.

There is still room in both boxes for future additions, just wished I could fit my 1/2" breaker bar in one of the boxes without taking most of the room up.

Funny you’re posting this. I’m in the same boat! I think I’m sold in my new plan. I have 2 zippered bags and a tool roll that’s way too heavy. It was a good thought, but I don’t like the execution.

I have a chainsaw box in the bed and will add the Milwaukee box, when I can find one. Depending on how much stuff I put in it I may ditch the chainsaw box. I may keep them separate to keep the bar&chain oil off other tools.

It's worked out pretty well organizing all my hand tools. Although it is wearing out a bit in the corners, and the waxed canvas has a funny smell. It sits in the truck bed. I'm thinking of getting a Step 22 Pangolin tool roll when it's time for a new one.

I also have another tool bag for other odds and ends like extra wire of different gauges, tape, zip-ties, a multi-meter, etc.

And then I have a converted $15 tool box from Walmart for my chainsaw.

I've found that it organizes my hand tools well and now I just lay it out in the garage when I'm wrenching on my JTR. It's heavy with all my things in there though.

its an aluminum pack out mounting plate- I was going to mount one to the forward most portion of the bed… I am still considering getting a couple to attach to the top of the decked system…..

The link provided a dead end. That being said I picked up what you were throwing down. Conceptually, I understand from your description, but think there would be an issue. The idea would require reaching over the bedside to engage the release switch from towards the center of the bed. I’m 6’3 and would have an issue doing this unless I was leaning all over the side of the bed. What was on the bed (mud, dried mud etc) would be all over me and a high likelihood of scratching the paint.

I have a 15’ steal cable running around the inside perimeter of the bed through stock tie down points. I’d be able to run this inside padlock loops for theft protection and use a auto winding ratchet for retention connected to the loops fixed to the wheel wells. If reach becomes an issue, I can transfer my old 56* wedge from my Dodge to the gladiator. Doesn’t take up much room and has multiple uses?. While nothing is theft proof, these steps, I feel, will help limit interest. The tri-fold adds as a 3rd and 4th layer of security.

The Milwaukee PACKOUT 38 in. Rolling Tool Chest is hard to find in stock anywhere. I ordered online from Home Depot And is supposed to be delivered today…we’ll see. I’ll post additional photos. I’ll have to perform some cosmetic surgery since the red clashes horribly with what will be predominantly yellow contents. Maybe a dark camouflage rattle can spritzing…lol

I have some Kline canvas zipper bags in various sizes. With my rear seat delete I pack them under the drivers side hatch. Recovery gear under passenger side hatch. I had two tool rolls but it was more bulk and harder to pack. I need to thin it out a little I know I have some duplicates.

I have a large bag with several smaller zipper nylon bags inside. Each small bag is labeled with what’s in it. I carry a decent compliment of tools if I’m going out very far. I’ll also take a separate bag with my big 1/2 Dewalt ( with specific sockets for tire changes) and the 3/8 impact driver, 2 batteries and the led light. These all use the same 20v batteries.
Id love to do the BoxoUSA roll up, but you can’t buy just the bag(I checked) and I don’t need anymore tools right now to justify $550 for it.
