So I have a new JT overland and the gas mileage is not impressive. I've mainly drove in the city but really short commutes. Farthest I've taken it on the highway is maybe about 15 miles. Right now it's showing me my average is 14.3 mpg. Is this standard? Everything I've read has said it should be about 17 city, 23 highway. This is my first Jeep, so maybe this is just expected lol. But curious to see what other's have experienced!
I’m getting 9-11 mpg 37’s with a programmer

Papa is right.

You need to measure some road mileage.

I measured mine over longer trips. Set mileage a to zero at fuel stop. Set my Gaia to a trip record and drove to the next fuel stop.

Truck 188.3
GPS 188.51

99.88% is basically dead on.

Checked it on the trip back.

Truck 189.7
GPS 189.97

99.86%

It took me a few 50 mile round trips locally to get my tire size, truck and tazer set right.
Wow. That's excellent.

I live a happier life not caring about mpg. If I wanted fuel economy, I'd drive a Prius.

In the long run, if you are so wrapped around the axle that saving a few bucks on fuel each week will make the difference between feast or famine, sell your JT and take the bus.... You can't afford nice things.

I recently put 35s on my Freedom. I have been averaging 18-20. I used to get 22-24 on stock tires.

Wow. I’m not sure if you intended for it to sound like that, but the “You can’t afford nice things” line is super condescending.

Yeah.

I think most of it in these forums isn't that they can't eat if they can't get better mpg, it's just sort of a challenge. And to me, if I can save a few bucks a month on fuel I can spend it on toys or other stuff. Maybe a different rear bumper?

I don't believe anyone here is to the point of not eating, but who doesn't like to shave some costs here and there, or make it a challenge to see if they can't do better, or "why is mine not doing better when the sticker says I should", whatever.

(and I agree with your comment)

I gave up on better mileage, because it just is not going to happen. I shave the cost, when possible, by getting fuel at Costco or Sam's Club. The 250 pounds from the cap and roof rack, plus the weight of everything else I carry, is a big drag on mileage.

I went in eyes open getting the JT. It is a brick and there is very little you can do about it. I got it to drive slowly down dirt roads. I am OK with the mileage because I am lucky enough to have a few choices of what I will drive. I own far too many cars. Funny that my 392 SPWB can beat the JT on highway miles and get me to where I am going in half the time as long as I don't get pulled over. But in general, it is more of a game for me. I have never used cruise control because I enjoy seeing how I can do myself. Also why I got the M6 instead of the A8. That's the fun of driving!

I will add that this forum is a very nice place to visit. I spend time on Dart, Charger, and Challenger forums. Folks here are pretty decent and helpful and I do find a lot of humor here as well. Not to bad mouth the others. MOPAR folks in general are a cut above. Overall one of the reasons I MOPAR or NoCar.

I just got 22 mpg on a hour long trip.

A lot of this is down to the driver. I was trying to get good MPGs and was hypermilling.

I typically get 11-17 depending on how I drive.

Is the in car average known to be accurate?
Mine is, calculated mpg was 14.4 car showed 14.9 but I had never reset my tire size as they wore down from 32.48 to 32

If you trade it in for a diesel you should see a 8-12mpg increase. ??

had too since this came back from the dead.

Zombie thread.

I got my best mpg in Florida. Two explanations for that -
Farther away from magnetic north than Iowa is,
and,
The closer you are to the equator, which is where the earth has its largest diameter, it means you are farther from the iron core, the source of gravity, so the truck is a bit lighter the closer you are to the equator. Gravity's force diminishes as you move away from the source of the gravitational forces.

So my truck was lighter, and there were fewer strong magnetic lines of force acting on the metals in the truck.
Plus if you hold a globe upright, as you drive souther, you are driving a steeper down-hill. You are still driving near the top of the arc, the flatter part, the farther north you are.
The worst mpg will be above the arctic circle, the best will be a few degrees north of the equator.

It's all science, guys.

I do better than that with a lift and 35’s. How you drive it makes a HUGE difference though. If you are one of those guys that races from light to light and has to pass everyone in front of him you’re not going to get the anywhere near stated mileage. I slowed way down after I retired and have noticed a huge difference in mileage gains with everything I drive. ?
