I'm looking at doing a 4" Rusty's lift, and have been looking at shocks (not sure about his)
Anyway, everywhere is go to look at shocks, none seem to differentiate between gas and diesel. There has to be a difference, the diesel is 400 lbs heavier.. am I missing something here?

Falcon has diesel-specific front part number - though it’s mainly because their 90° reservoir on the standard would hit the aux battery on the diesel. So they replace it with a shorter one. No idea if they change the valving for the diesel - I suspect not, since they’re adjustable shocks and the whole off-road industry is pretty lax about tuning. Way more interested in minimizing part numbers

I think the springs are more important than the shocks. Will be getting our 3.5” Clayton diesel specific overland plus lift installed this week. Went with the adjustable King shocks with remote reservoirs, which Clayton said should work fine.
Shocks are actually more important than the springs! EDIT: They are equally important in the suspension package, but in our particular bottoming saga, I feel it's the shocks.

I've made 3 different spring swaps (Evo 120ish lb, 3.5 Clayton Gas 188lb, 3.5 Clayton Diesel 216lb) and the bottoming continued until the shocks were properly valved for enough mid speed damping to control the weight. Even the added Fox hydraulic bumps weren't enough alone to damp the bottoming.......

I've also had 3 different shocks with dozens of different calibrations installed! Premium shocks like Fox 2.5 Elites did not make much difference until I added the mid speed valving changes.

I think most manufacturers if not all are using a "If it fits, it ships" philosophy in this regard.

Aev might be worth considering….. they have diesel and hd spring options… they also have bilstien 5100 and 8100 shocks valves for their springs and the weights they have outlined.

Suggesting both because springs and shocks work best when matched….. meaning the shocks are valved for the springs…. And it doesn’t sound like you have pulled the trigger on anything yet.
5100 are great entry level shocks- far better than the crap they put on the rubicon…. 8100’s are good middle of the road shocks….
They don’t offer the 8100 dual remote bypass but these are badass upper end shocks. ?

I have not used or tested any JT stuff from AEV so I can't confirm nor recomend.....BUT I do have some experience with the JK products they offered on 5165's I thought worked well.

The JLU AEV system I've had in the shop on 5100's I was not impressed with on the road at all and the client isn't happy compared to his AEV JK either.

I feel like AEV puts the most time into getting a "system" right than any other manufacturer. They don't work for me and prefer to build my own "systems" to fit the need, but for a buyer that needs a one and done...might be a great choice?

Rusty's is yet another manufacturer that conceals the spring rate specs from the end user. I would walk........ It's like "Russian Roulette" without knowing!

I went with Icons on a 2.5 Clayton Ride Rite diesel lift. They have been working really well on road with light off-road for the last couple thousand miles. Even though they are not diesel specific.

The factory 22 JTRD shocks bottomed out, but once I did the TSB and go the new one it stopped....

i have been happy pairing the Rock krawler lift kit and their mid tier shocks (mono tube) together. They build both so the shocks seem pretty well valved, maybe a touch soft but not terrible. You can always revalve their shocks if you don't like their tune.

unfortunate their spring rate isn't advertised. But they may tell you if you call.

if you go more then 3" you will need a different front drive shaft, my oem front is at it's max range with the RK 3" lift.

I can live without the front shaft for now, we did a 4" on the wife's 21 JLURD and along I'm not trying to drop both front wheels then it's ok

Are you running the diesel?

Yes i have a ecoD,

my setup
https://rockkrawler.com/jt-3-0-inch-diesel-adventure-no-limits-system-stage-1/

RK also has several valve stacks they can sell you if you don't like the out of the box stack.

I opted for rubber bushing for less maintenance, it gets old having to replace hiem joints every other year, and i didn't need the little extra articulation.

if you carry heavy in the bed get the 4.5" rear springs. I upgraded to those.

Then get the 4.5" rear springs if you don't mind a little rake.

i'll try to snap an updated photo with the 4.5" rears installed

I went with Rustys 4” and his upgraded shocks (800) and it rides soooo much better than stock. Am very happy with the lift.

I went with AEV dualsport diesel specific springs paired with Falcon’s 3.1 shocks (for the gasser). Rides incredibly well. After 40k miles the springs and shocks still feel and look like new. Had to relo my aux battery but they do offer the smaller resi for diesels.

Just a word of caution if you opt to go Falcon, their customer service is pretty terrible. The quality and ride are great but unlike other $3k+ range providers, they won’t be there to help if they screw up. That has been my experience anyway. I’ll never buy from them again but they make a fine shock.
