Get all of what the shop said, IRT the diagnosis and proposed repair in printout. If you have less confidence in their prognosis, escalate to the Customer Resource Center "Jeep Cares"; generate a case for tracking purposes, and suggest a second shop/dealer take a look. Should you wan to spring for an independent diagnosis, try to locate a shop with requisite diagnostic capability to log-on to the network, for an in-depth look at what the modules on the CAN have to say. Expect multiple "U" comms-related junk (literally).

No, it doesn't. Payload is likely less than 1,600 pounds if it's something like max tow if you've added any weight to the truck.
Others have even less payload.
Maybe you mean towing??

Did you weigh your tires? Tire weight and size also stress braking. Since these downshift to aid braking, it is definitely more stress. Void the warranty - it should not, but you've gone way outside of normal and have lowered your payload and towing ability with that big lift and those huge tires.
Don't believe it - go ask the pros out there that do truck mods for a living. One has a great YT video about how a lift like that and those tires will cut your numbers.

With 37" tires, what GEARS did you change to? You did regear, didn't you?
I have to say this truck has zero engine braking. Even compared to my Honda Odyssey. It holds back nothing just makes noise. Worst vehicle I have driven personally for that feature.

The ZF is a pretty well sorted and stout transmission in most cases. It is used, in admittedly slightly different variations, in a lot of much higher HP vehicles. And there is absolutely no way that I'd even think about the $10k quote as being realistic. I've bought brand new long block 911 engines for less than that. There are thousands of those transmissions in junkyards and that is very likely what you would end up with or a 'reconditioned' one. Go to another dealer or go to a qualified independent.

$10K may be on the high side. But the transmission alone from the dealer is $4K, add labor, shop supplies, misc small parts it adds up fast.

If I am going down a hill and am gaining speed - if I apply the brake just right then let up, it downshifts and slows. Lots of hills here so I see the effects every so often. Towing it's even more pronounced in those times.

By the way they are asking 10k to replace the transmission????
This sounds high, I just had a transmission replaced in September, it was $7k. Maybe just the variation in where we are located but 3k difference is enough to make me shop around.
As others have said, try a different dealer, generate a case with all the documentation you can get with JeepCares.

My transmission failed last year with only 15k miles, they found burnt oil and some metal pieces when they drained the oil pan (this is the first thing Jeep tell the dealer to do), (speculation is that it was under filled at the factory). There are other similar cases out there, but It's rare.
i had a similar failure to you, I was just driving at 15mph when it happened and thankfully not on a freeway, I pulled the codes with my OBD reader and it had multiple errors. I knew it was bad at that point, then sent It to my dealer.
issue I had back then was them trying to source a replacement transmission so it took a good few weeks to source one.

Unfortunately for you having 37"s is not going to help your cause, I had the stock 33"s on my vehicle and the warranty was approved immediately. Your dealer is not at fault as they have to strictly follow what Jeep tells them for warranty submission. Jeep looks for photos and there is a online report form that is filled out.

My dealer told me that up to 35" is generally ok. Anything beyond that will be denied.

hopefully you can find a good used transmission, or a refurb unit. As someone else mentioned it is a 4k part, there is a good bit of labor involved to replace it. 10k sounds high, I'm sure you could negotiate that one you are paying out of your own pocket.

I want to lift my jeep and put larger tires on it but i don't want to run into a situation like this. They are blaming the trans failure on the lift and oversized tires Unfortunately I don't see anyway around this

They are out there for not much. Wouldn't be a bad idea for long term keepers to buy one while they're inexpensive and readily available for sure.

Just be sure to seal them up and store them properly.
I have a spare TF727 for my 73 and a spare 998 for my 82 in case I want to convert to automatic in the future - as well as spare parts enough to rebuild the T5 currently in it.
