Dealer didn’t put oil in after changing filter?

I just returned home after several hours stranded at a gas station. After my "service" today I completely lost oil pressure after a 100 mile round trip to my brother in laws house. It appears there was no/very little oil put in after replacing the filter. There was not a drop of oil on the dip stick. the truck was not running normally but I'm a little new to the diesel world so I thought it may have been the cold weather. The truck has been towed to my home and will be towed to the dealer that did the oil change on Monday. I will be there first thing at 7:00am Monday morning and will be expecting some answers.

Could it be anything else potentially?

What are some things I should ask/do to document things now and when I get there Monday? First new vehicle and usually do my own oil changes but took advantage of the 3 free ones with Jeep wave. Never again. Tagging @JeepCares in hopes they can point me in the right direction.

It would be nice if Jeep Wave program came with the option to pick up the oil and filters at the dealer so those of us who can could do our own maintenance.

Have you done a cold check of the oil level, any signs of leaks, any contamination of the coolant that may point to head issues, did the Jeep overheat or appear to be running high temps?

I'm really hoping it's a mechanical issue rather than dealer/ mechanic incompetence, that is truly worrying.

Maybe I've just grown cynical, but I doubt you're going to get anything more than a diagnostic appointment scheduled 3 weeks from now with no loaner provided. Going in hot expecting accountability will be rough because you probably won't get even the most perfunctory apology, and frankly that's probably only going to set you off more as it would with me.

Yes, absolutely. They could have airgunned the drain plug on so hard it destroyed its threads and fell out as you were driving. More options I can't think of almost certainly exist too. Doubt any would make you happy or have any faith in that dealer.

The service work done on that oil change is on video. They can all watch what happened in that 10 min window your truck was in there getting done.

Epstein was supposed to be on video too ?

Get your hands on a clean plastic empty wide mouthed bottle of some kind and about 8 ounces in capacity and label it "oil sample".
Hand it to them and request that they capture a sample quickly after removing the drain plug, if it's still there ?.

If you do get a sample send it to Blackstone labs for analysis.

All of this still relies upon dealer honesty, so yes, they could easily give you oil from another vehicle.

If you'd posted before sending it to them I would have recommended having an independent mechanic check it. Everything points back to the scene of the crime at this early stage, and you're handing them your evidence.

Thanks for the reply’s. I’m going to go check thing out in the daylight today and will post some pics as I do.

I am fully prepared for very little response from the dealer but thought I would ask for any suggestions. Unfortunately so far all of the dealers in STL have been pretty rough to deal with. Bought the jeep from Gupton in Nashville because of the great customer service (and price). Unfortunately that’s too far to drive for an oil change.

Went to the closest one to my house in a pinch before an impromptu overnight trip we were going to go on tonight.

Had a night to sleep on it so I will be calm and collected when I visit the dealer Monday.

A neighbor had the “oil change without new oil put back in“ thing happen years ago. Brand new Volvo. In their case, they didn't make it far.

If you made it ~100 miles, my assumption is that it was filled with fresh oil, but the oil filter housing and/or drain plug wasn’t properly secured. Either of those being the case would be easily confirmed via a visual inspection though.

You have any spray beneath the truck or the filter assembly towards the driver's side ? If it dumped while driving it would be everywhere under the truck. I wouldn't touch anything til they look at it. You know how the blame game goes with some dealers.

We have had history of the 3.0 blowing filter assemblies on cold starts. Happens on the JL and JT..

Excellent advise: Do not clean or wipe up any evidence.. Take a video of checking the oil in the daylight along with video underneath; be sure the date and time are ON. If that low on oil call or get to the dealership without driving your rig.. Meet with the Ser Mgr, not an advisor on this situation and get his direction on how to get your rig to the dealership.
