Essentially correct, but I would leave the fuse and terminal block (blue x) intact for future use.So using the harness…
dismantle it
remove the parts marked in blue
and the essentially make it a extension cable for the parts in green?

looking a little closer at it it seems like the blue wire would be the limiting factor in just turning it into an extension. I guess I will need to figure out what gauge? Wire that is an add an equal length to match the rest

You'll want to double check once you have the dash opened up, but I believe you would be cutting off the gray plug. Definitely double check though! It's been quite a while since I installed that splitter in my truck so I can't remember for sure.
I think the blue wire is for the oem socket back light which you can ignore.
The red should be +12 and the brown -12
