I kind of thought my 8 spd transmission had issues, now I'm kind of thinking it is....

Just the nature of this particular transmission. And very likely some "wonky" Jeep/Chrysler tuning..

An example.. I was driving from Atlanta to Destin the other day and traffic downtown ATL got crazy. Stop. Go. Gas hard. abrupt on/off throttle. Stop hard. etc... for a good 30 minutes or so. The transmission on occasion would shift up and down harder than normal. A light thud almost.. Surge on some shifts. Hold gears longer than normal. etc. I was kind of disappointed as I was thinking it might be an after vacay dealership visit to have the transmission looked at.

Anyways, since then it has been all normal traffic. And it's been butter. All uninterrupted acceleration and it shifts beatifully. Smooth. Even with somewhat aggressive acceleration it's butter.

So, I guess now my thinking is it is just fine. However, it seems it does not like "interupted, off/on traffic-y acceleration/deceleration".

Anyone else feel or experience the same?

I find mine kind of clunky on downshifts at stops. I dislike it. I wonder if it’s a learning thing from the previous owners driving.

Mine can be somewhat clunky at stops. It is usually, however, more prevalent if I am stopping aggressively.

What’s your model and mileage? Are you able to check the oil level at proper temp? Very simple to do.

I'm still not 100% checked out on the difference between the Z850HP and the Z850RE.

Once upon a time i was led to believe the RE is a ZF designed transmission licensed to FCA to build themselves. Leading me to believe the HP is built in germany by ZF and the RE is built in the US/Mexico by FCA. But upon looking for confirmation of that, it's difficult to find.

I hear of a lot more failures on the 50RE than i do on the 50HP though.

I believe it is mostly the same as the real ZF. Also, I agree that it seems more problems with the RE. Statistically however, MAny many more RE's are out there as there are few diesels. By percentage of failures to units sold it might be more equal... maybe..

Mine seems a little clunky sometimes - typically if I am in stop and go traffic and am driving aggressively - it feels like it gets a little confused on what gear to go to or being able to react quickly enough to what I'm doing.

Overall though it works great - been very happy with it.

Not comparable. The diesel uses the zf875hp. The zf850hp is mostly found in BMWs (and a few alfas) and while BMWs have their issues, transmissions aren't commonly among them.

I'm only referencing the two different transmission in Wranglers and Gladiators. Few HP's sold compared to RE's.

My '20 Gladiator overland will occasionally -hold- a gear too long, usually 4th around 35-40 mph. A quick shift to manual, upshift to 5th then back to auto usually does the trick. It happens so rarely that when it does occur, I usually have a -moment- where i think "oh yeah, this again" cue manual upshift, then back to auto.

Curious, are you always hard on it? I've never had a time where I needed to hard gas and hard break over and over. I know I tend to keep it slower during stop/go traffic, I just don't do full gas until full break....

My use of “hard” isn’t that hard. Rephrasing I should’ve said choppy, kind of off and on throttle. Typical off and on bumper to bumper Atlanta traffic. Rpm’s well under 4000. Probably more 3500-ish and under. Not full throttle.

I always like comments that say , BMW's have their issues, about every friend we have owns a BMW of some sort. My wife And I alone have owned 7 over the past 16 yrs and not one has ever given a issue. A couple we put over 200,000 miles on. I currently own a 2013 BMW 328I Xdrive coupe with 158,000 miles on it and the Wife has a 2016 BmW X5 50i with 78,000 miles. No one I know has ever had a issue with them. You stay up on the maintenance and they are solid. I've own about every brand you can think of since 1996 when the wife and I got married. BMW's have been the most reliable of any brand and that's including the one Mercedes we had in 2014.
