Is that for both your vehicles or just one? I dont pay anything fortunately.
So it's FREE to put a plate on your JT and drive it??
You can buy a car, get a free plate and drive it and pay no annual fee to have it on the roads?

Tennessee is so ridiculously high on everything!!! 1000's of $$$$$ a year on land, vehicles, food, everything!! No one else should move here. EVER!!! They tax you to death then tax you for dieing!! No one eles move here! You have been warned!

Ok so I'm stretching it just a bit. We have a pretty good tax structure here. No state income tax. My home on 5 acres runs $950 a year, tags are $74 a year for cars and trucks per tag. Speciality tags are $115 a year. Motorcycles are $50ish a year. We do however have one of if not the highest sales tax in the nation at 9.25% and that includes big items like Jeeps. At least everyone in the state pays the same tax fairly. So based on that, as mentioned above, no one else should ever move here!!
I need to move about 20 miles to where you live since I am paying both KPT city and county taxes which combined are almost 4k for about a 1/4 acre of land plus house. I have the cheap state tag which was $5 last year versus the $65 I was paying for a specialty tag before

Here's some numbers from when we were stationed in SC. I'll round the numbers because it's been two years.
2020 JT: $800
2017 JKU: $680
2015 Kia Soul: $350
2017 Boat: $350
2017 Yamaha Boat engine: $250
No fee for trailers. A tag isn't required.

*For the JT and JKU we only paid $20 because we're military. But had we not been, it would have been expensive. The JT has been re-registered in my home state of FL and it's only $10 per year. And I didn't even add in the property tax for the house.

I am confused. Are we talking about tax on your house/property? Or annual registration fees? Or just one time tax for purchase of a new vehicle?
This is an annual county tax paid on all titled vehicles, trailers, boats, etc. I guess having had to pay it my entire life, I was unaware that some townships and counties may not require such a tax.
Yes, sales tax is also paid when a vehicle is purchased. Yes, we also have to pay registration fees and a state inspection is required once a year.

This is a property tax for just having the damned thing.

License/registration required for trailers. Amount depends on the trailer and the weight capacity. My car hauler costs more per year than a 7'x6' small utility trailer I have with 1 axle and 2 small tires.
But both are pretty cheap. Both require a plate.

Here in Georgia we pay a ~6.5% sales tax at time of purchase. If you trade in your car the value of the trade in is subtracted from the new vehicle cost when calculating the sales tax on the new vehicle.

No annual use tax and only a yearly registration fee of less than $100.

It looks like some states get the money in different ways.

Virginia collects a sales and use tax of 4.15% when the vehicle is titled. There's a $75 minimum.

The annual vehicle inspection fee is $20.

The annual vehicle registration fee is $30.75 to $35.75.

Some states have a personal property tax. It is like the property taxes on your home, but applied to other tangible items like your vehicle. It is separate from purchase taxes and registration fees.
Gotcha. Man that is bonkers. Taxed to earn money, taxed to buy stuff, then taxed again recurrently to own said purchased items? That seems excessive - I have never heard of a personal property tax. So what would that apply to other than vehicles? I mean, your TV? Or just big ticket items? I would assume it is based on purchase value?

So it's FREE to put a plate on your JT and drive it??
You can buy a car, get a free plate and drive it and pay no annual fee to have it on the roads?
For me, yes. It was part of the reason I justified buying the JT in the first place. That and a huge down payment from selling my OBS 350. When I first moved here I opted to get permanent plates since my OBS 7.3 and TJ qualified. So I paid up front something like $1,200 bucks. But I dont have to do yearly tabs because they literally say "perm" where your tab would go - permenant plates. Reserved for older vehicles, I think 11 years and older. My TJ is I guess 17 years old now. Of course I sold the OBS 7.3 so I lost money on that deal because the up front cost was more than if I just paid for new tabs each year since I sold it 5 years after moving here. As for the JT, well we have no sales tax here but I have DV plates on that so I just have to get a tab each year and its something like a $20 processing (paperwork) fee. But that's far shy of what it would normally be, somewhere in the high 200's I think. But you can only claim DV plates on one vehicle so if I bought another new vehicle - which I dont plan to, then I would have to pay taxes on that.

Now as for property taxes, well it depends where you live. See Missoula has INSANE high taxes for being relatively small compared to cities around the nation. And they have crazy restrictive building codes as well. I live in a super small, depressed, very rural area. No zoning here, it's too small, and no codes despite the county seat being in this town. Which is great because I can fix up my own house - which really needs it. Property taxes here are still high, but not unreasonable - my property being nearly 100 years old is about $1,200 a year. Once it gets fixed up and registered as a historical house though I'm sure that will triple. I can't imagine living somewhere with high taxes. My friend in WA pays something like $900 a MONTH. I mean, thats more than my mortgage! Plus, that nasty place is considering enacting a income tax on a already high property and sales tax.

Man.....that sucks! :-( Only a state income tax here, and property tax (which depending on what county/cit one is in can be SUBSTANTIAL. Oh yeah and a few towns like whitefish and Missoula and probably Bozeman have additional.....whats it called...I think the resort tax they call it. Basically extra taxes on sold items and services to help pay for the additional strain on various things like roads, and utilities, etc...from being a 'destination'. It's contentious - but to be fair those places do see HUGE amounts of people in the summer and it really takes a big tole on pretty much everything. Unfortunately it hurts those who live there and is pushing people out.

8.625% in NY for Sales tax, no personal property tax. Real Property tax however makes up for anything we save in personal property tax.

In Kannapolis, NC in the City on the Cabarrus County side I pay $427 a year for mine. If I wasn't in the city you can take $167 off, they charge you city and county taxes but only once a year. They got my tax value at $34,000 on my 2020 sport and I paid $37,125 out the door for it.

Got ours today.
Rural Central Virginia
21 Mojave - Sticker price was $62,225
Personal Property Tax - $675.28 (6 mos)

Typically, my area is pretty low on taxes, so I'm curious as to how this compares to others.
You must leave near me, also central rural. before VA I lived in northern NJ. I paid 16k a year in property taxes for a 1800sqft home with 0.15 acre lot, and got nothing for all that money paid. F that.

Anyway, there was no personal property taxes in NJ, because you bent over for everything else, additionally the sales tax on a vehicle purchase was high, almost 10%. In addition title and registration was triple what it is in VA. I register my car for 3 years here in VA and it’s half the price that it was for half the duration in NJ.

So when asked about this topic, having both sides, I usually explain to people that in VA as an example you pay a lot less sales tax on a car, then sure you have the personal property tax, but it still is less than other states total tax on the vechicle, plus you get the added fraction of lessor taxes overall.

Would I prefer not to pay it? Absolutely, but there’s got to be a way for the county to produce revenue and the thinking is more vehicles than houses, it makes sense (cringe). I hate taxes as do we all, but just saying, not defending them. At least your personal prop tax stays in your county and goes to fund actual improvements and etc that you have a vote on. That’s how I rationalize it.

Annual registration was right at $900 at purchase and the license fee has been dropping 8.4% every year till 12 years where it bottoms out. I think I pay $140 in weight fees for the privileged of owning a commercial vehicle. The year it was down to $790 total?

I always figured CA was the highest on taxes and fees when it came to vehicle, but it appears I was wrong!
Yeah the commercial vehicle fee is stupid, but atleast we get to parks in the yellow li
