I would absolutely NOT do it yourself. Let the Dealer do it. Don't give them the opportunity to deny your recall claim.

Heard about this issue just after purchasing my 22 and I've been adding Hot Shot's Secret Diesel Extreme in every tank since. Here's a little something that might be of assistance to anyone who likes convenience and saving space.
I purchased these 8 oz containers on Amazon and fill up several with the additive. I then store them in a small crushable lunch cooler in my covered bed. I simply take one out and add it to each tank every time with every fill-up. Simple!
I did test the plastic containers first to ensure that the additive didn't corrode or dissolve the bottles. All good!

The pump failing isn't something you can see, it just blows and that's all she wrote.... even the internal screen can't catch the material......
Don't mess with it, doing so does nothing but increase the odds of failure....
Mine worked great, until it didnt..... pop, game over.....

When I took mine in I think they checked the vin and date of manufacturer and that's it. They're not going to take things apart because they don't have the fix yet. Since this is a safety recall, they're not going to wait until it fails otherwise that's a huge liability for them. Now, when the fix is available, I figure they'll attach to the computer and run a test on the injectors to check flow rates. I'm only a shade-tree mechanic, so I couldn't say for sure.

If you start taking things apart, which will be almost impossible to hide, will give them a hard out for covering it since they don't know what you did. Any tool marks on bolt heads would be a major no-no. Just let them do it.

On the CP4 pump. The black connector piece between the V. You have to remove that to see the screen on the bottom of it.

Well, not knowing what kind of mods you're talking about makes this more difficult. If there the plugin power modifying type, I'd remove them until the warrantee work is done. Why? If it happens away from home and it's towed to the dealer your screwed. If it's a winch or bolt on, I plan on removing mine, assuming it doesn't happen away somewhere...if it happens away somewhere. I don't know if they would, but I don't want to come in and get a supprise bill for them having to remove something that's not factory. ...though ultimately it should be their issue and they can pass the bill to Bosch. On the other hand, they may not reinstall with the attention to detail I apply.

With regard to how are they going to know? I think they're replacing all of them. It's not a question as to if...more than when it's going to go. I figure like I said before, if they can check injector flow, they will be able to see if something is impleading flow. Otherwise, when they take the pump off, they may be able to see something that tells them it's in the process of letting go. It's all speculation until the repair procedure is released.
