People Work?
3000 degrees and nearly impossible to extinguish.
They loaded the smoldering EV into a dumpster and buried it in sand.

i mean, the headline is a bit sensationalist, but not entirely. It's not "burning for weeks with no way to extinguish". I imagine the reason they are burying it for 3 weeks is they just aren't sure about reignition and it's not worth the risk to dig an obviously totaled hunk of trash out any sooner.

To the EV consumer, if such a thing were to happen, who covers the dumpster rental and dirt and sand? Fire department? Insurance? Owner? I'm guessing this is one of those things that's not quite worked out yet in most states.

I'm not sure my detached garage is far enough away from the house.
Now you have to consider 60 people stuffed in a space between the house and the garage. When was the last time you held a party like that in your back yard?

Maybe when you brought the gladiator home?

Yeah, the battery burn problem is definitely a really bad thing (TM) when it happens... Clean up afterwards is pretty messy too, not sure if it is better or worse from a "green" perspective than a burned up petroleum based vehicle.

Come on. Stop watching Fox News. This is just commentary meant to further scare people that already have a fear of change. Rise above the idiocy of that message.

Lithium is a nasty fire and cleanup isn't good either...not hype from any political view. As someone who has been using Lithium batteries for decades, I've seen radios and other stuff burned up by it. Nothing like having your radio turn in to a 20 pound thrermite grenade... especially when it's in your rucksack on your back. Then the 1506 investigation on it. ?
Hmmm... most here don't remember the hype of Ford Pinto and AMC Gremlin fires from accidents due to fuel tank location. I'd bet the E.V. battery fires are more numerous and worse still.
Do I still use and trust Lithium batteries yes. Heck I'd love to convert my MJ into a E.V. especially to piss off the greenies parking in E.V. parking and charging up. Where I did work had a few "free" chargers for E.V. use, I say "free" but not to us tax payers, we are paying for them.

Based on the Jaguar I-PACE EV

I found a lot of headlines about the I-PACE catching on fire (yes, I know this source is often a little hyperbolic, this article seems fairly neutral though). Obviously Waymo vehicles will have a lot of high-power electrical modifications on top of the base EV driveline, so there's that

Hard to get solid stats about how often this happens to EVs versus any other kind of vehicle, and articles about the new dangerous thing are way more interesting and clickable than the boring old dangerous thing

But that's just about frequency - it's clear that severity of these events is different, currently harder to put out and more prone to reignition. Perhaps that may change some day as fire departments adapt

The only difference is the population that comes to put it out.
Except the only reason they had 60 people was for training reasons. They had already put out the blaze the night before by spraying it for an hour and were now trying something new since it could restart.

These fires are serious, but this is sensationalism at its finest.

Well, it won't "burn for weeks" because they already put it out. Within hours of it happening. It's not like this was some crazy fire that nobody could do anything about. They were able to deal with it as quickly as most other fires.
