Sup,

Truck bed was broken into. Tonneau cover was pried open. I was thinking of putting some kind of alarm used on windows so that when it opens a chime goes off.

Does an automotive version exist?

Any other ideas?

Thanks

Look at https://www.jeepgladiatorforum.com/forum/threads/opening-tonneau-cover-set-off-alarm.27897/

Otherwise, https://www.amazon.com/pull-string-alarm/s?k=pull+string+alarm

Or, don't keep anything in the Jeep you aren't ok losing. It's just stuff.

Sorry to hear that. Unfortunately a thief with motivation and time will always win... it is a shame really.

What kind of tonneau cover? One of those track sliding ones or the OEM? The problem with the alarm is that it’s not going off until the bed is breached which at that point means they’ve damaged your cover which may be the most expensive thing. In that case the alarm hasn’t accomplished anything. Also, I don’t know what your parking situation is. If I could park my truck in a garage I’d do that. If you’re in an apartment, townhome or condo complexes it’s obviously a different story. But the problem there is that peoples alarms piss everyone off and/or they ignore them. The thieves know that. Unless you hear it yourself and react immediately chances are no one else will do anything and these guys work really fast. When I lived in a fairly nice townhouse my neighbors just used my open truck bed as a trash can. The one time my truck was broken in to and I mean gutted with parts all over the parking lot (no one apparently heard this) my neighbors wouldn’t even make eye contact with me or look at the truck.

Your best option is better physical security, I.e a better tonneau cover. Unless they come equipped with a breaker bar and are willing to make a lot of noise they’d probably have a hard time getting into a Diamondback or something similar.

Are you trying to prevent the thief from gaining access and/or taking stuff? Or do you just want to be notified that it's happened?

If #1, an alarm won't really help you. By the time it goes off, the thief is already in. You'll want to look for something more secure from the outset rather than adding a noisemaker.

If #2, consider systems that actually do two-way communication. A simple contact switch like you mentioned is easy to find and turn off. They work well for houses because you're typically in it when it goes off. Vehicles, not so much, and often a distance away.

You just need a cheap hood pin switch that comes with every after market alarm. You could in theory tie it into the real hood pin.
I like this idea

I put a Ring mailbox motion detector in our mailbox so I didn't have to walk up the driveway in the winter only to find there's no mail there............ it does require the Ring hub and needs to be in a reasonable proximity of each other. The antenna for the mailbox motion detector has to be in the open, not inside the truck.
I get notified on my phone and our Echo devices announce "you've got mail" when the mail box is opened.

To latch down the rear of my cover -

Does that use the preexisting hole at the top?

Anyone that has had to regularly deal with people breaking into their cars knows that if you make it more secure, they will just do more damage getting in.

Sometimes the best solution is to leave nothing in there and leave it unlocked, hopefully they try to just open it before prying on stuff.

After buying a Jeep, how much money can we have left when it's all tied up in mods?
