My ride is going on 3yrs old in May. Ever since new the Navigation system has sucked.
I've always just used my phone & Goggle maps.
So I got a notice today that I can update my Uconnect/Navigation and save $50.00 off the standard pricing of $149.00. My question is have they done any better job with the Navigation, to warrant me updating a bad system from the beginning?

What is it? Just an update to the maps? If so, its a hard pass. Google, Waze, Onx, Avenza, Gasbuddy, and Spotify; they work in every vehicle that I’m in, not just 1 vehicle. Heck, I’ld almost be ok with removing the entire head unit and being able to just drop in an iPad mini ( or full iPad ).

bought mine new in 2022... i was really surprised how bad Uconnect & the nav system worked- I let mine expire except--- did re-start the sirius xm radio portion for 6 bucks a month or something recently.

I do listen to xm radio or my own music from my phone-- also using google maps from my phone...

The only thing I'm using is the Nav and the hotspot. I don't pay to update the Nav, not interested in that since I can do all of that through my phone. My hotspot required some kind of system upgrade and I didn't buy that, it just happened a couple of times while I was driving the JT. The hotspot had stopped working, and it seems like they came up with some kind of fix that required an upgrade and they just pushed it down to my Jeep.

I'd skip it. I have the big 12in screen in my Ram and I still prefer using Google Maps to their Tom Tom nav. And that Tom Tom one looks way better than the 8in Uconnect ones in the Jeep.

I've been getting those notices every year since I purchased my JT new in 2020. Hard pass. I've used apple maps all the U.S. and Europe with no and it updates automatically. All i paid was the price of admission. Car nav should be the same - at lest for something similar to a warranty period.

You could do a hotspot from your mobile device as well ( depending on your device/provider ). Your Jeep’s hotspot isn’t going to be any better or worse than the cellular carrier that it’s going through. And if you own the hotspot, you can use it anywhere away from your vehicle.

My cellular provider's hotspot is iffy at best. I kinda like having the Jeep as the hotspot, I rarely need anything more than that when I'm traveling.

I don’t know your plans, nor your areas, nor your phone, so if it works well for you, then that is totally awesome. I’m talking about tethering off your phone. I have an older phone and it doesn’t get the same data speed as my wife’s phone. Where I live and roam, if it’s not ATT ( or reseller ), then it just kind of sucks. If we go remote, sometimes I’ll have service where she doesn’t, and anywhere more populated then she’ll have better service. I wouldn’t expect your hotspot to be over satellite ( but maybe it is ). When you pay for that hotspot service attached to your vehicle, I would still expect that to go through the same cellular carrier as your phone, but it could be different; meaning the same towers. For you, it might be interesting to do various speed tests, both upload/download, maybe fast.com, with different devices and see if you find something with better bandwidth ( rates, limits, or caps ). If you find something interesting, please share your findings in a new thread, I’m genuinely curious.

Sorry to the OP for hijacking the thread a bit.

For the sake of keeping my JT up to date I'd do the update, but IMHO these built in NAV systems are a general fail. They're never worth the cost, updates are slow and out of date when they do arrive and they usually come with some Sirius apendage cost that doesn't die when you do. If I could have avoided it on my new '23 JT I would have.

My 21 was used when I bought it but the maps had recently been updated. The only "update" to navigation is going to be changes and additions to the roads in the U.S. Unneeded with most cell phones. So in my case "why?".
My wife has a Mazda CX-5 and "if" I want to update the nav I usually only have to wait a month into the new year and I can get buy a knockoff, copied SD card for about $50 but again, why?

Not worth the $50, I always use google maps on my phone which obviously apple car play. Google has been more accurate.

So who has a good off road nav? Garmin or one of the others. Can Gina or X be downloaded into the 8.4 in the JT?
