I was going by the GVWR and keeping it under 5k lbs but now people are telling me my payload on my Rubicon (1126 on door) it’s too low to tow anything but a pop up;(
Family of 4 combined weight 500 and what all do I have to add up from here?

Blows my mind I can’t tow a 3884lbs 21.5 ft even with a top of the line gladiator

I tow a 5000 travel trailer with my Mojave and have zero issues. If your payload is 1126 then you take away the weight of every person and anything else in your gladiator, then what you have left would be for tongue weight. That can be 10-15% depending on the camper. So a camper with a 500lb tongue weight comes off of that 1126. You also need to account for the weight of the weight distribution hitch which is around 80 lbs. I hope that helps.

Payload is not the towing load but the tongue weight is. 1126 is the starting point, subtract your tongue weight and that is what's left for your Gladiator payload. Toss the rest in your camper and be aware of your tongue weight changes.

Sport, Rubicon ??

I have a Rubicon as well. I pulled 6500lbs and maybe 500lbs of tongue weight. The only other payload was 3 persons ( under 500). It pulled okay, revs going up hill.

You are kind of stuck with minimizing your capacity in your truck. You can load the trailer up with your camping gear. A weight distribution hitch is not worth it for a mid size truck and small camper in my opinion.

Best news I’ve heard! What all do I gotta consider with payload? People, trailer tongue weight and what else?

Basically anything in or on the bed, people and items carried in the cab. If you added any modifications, they count too, ie. winch, upgraded bumpers.

You're not in a race to go camping. Just take it slow and make sure your trailer brakes are set right. The Gladiator will pull that size camper easy.

You can add a weight distribution hitch, but if is is not set up correctly, if will not work for it's intended purpose or you can damage your trailer or truck. Your truck will do fine the way it is.

You’d be surprised how easy it is to go over rated capacities, especially on any of these overlanding rigs. Hell, even a lot of 1500 series trucks I’d say are probably close to if not over payload when pulling a travel trailer.

Your JT could probably handle that 5,000lb trailer no problem, even as the family grows up.

However, think about what the liability of being over weight and being in a collision means to you and those who may be affected and acting accordingly.

A towing vehicle upgrade? A downgrade to travel trailer? Proceed with caution?

Meh, people get too hung up on the number as if the truck will suddenly break in half if you are a bit over. Not saying you should go to 8k weight in the truck, but if you did you wouldn't be the first one to do it either. The axles are rated for 7500 pounds, which in many states is all the legally matters as far as payload is concerned.

Im probably over by 300ish pounds when we tow the 4.6klb camper with 500ish tongue weight, and haven't had an issue.

You needed to do your homework. Rubicon has a low payload because of the soft springs. Max tow would have been the one that would have provided you the best towing and a base sport would provide you the best payload capacity.

To your point, I have a smart cap on a slider, 30lb recovery kit, winch and the usual crap in the cab. I can legally haul 3 people with no extra gear. Toss on a trailer and there goes the limit imposed by the God's.

You can see why there are limits, it's the beginning of the end.

oddly that low limit is only a difference 350lbs of GVWR.

The payload in my High Altitude is dismal LOL!

958lbs that's with a GVWR of 5800lbs
