I was just on Hatteras July 4th week, best beaches!
I love it down there. I wish we could camp on the beach. I’d buy a StarLink and never leave. It’s funny. People I encounter in Costco parking lots, at gas stations, etc who see my Jeep are always asking me the same thing “are you preparing for the apocalypse?”. I can’t overstate how often people say something like that. Maybe it’s just the times we live in.

Meanwhile, I feel like I discovered the secret recipe. I can hang out all day on the beach with the OBX breeze and that surprisingly blue water in OI, I don’t burn up, I’ve got my fridge, stove, fire pit, solar power, a toilet and bathroom/changing stall, a sprayer tank to wash off sand. I can fish, surf, play frisbee with the dog or just stare out at the ocean. I’m planning on getting an X-Cat sailing catamaran next year that you can put on the trucks rack or on top of a small off road camper like an opus or patriot which Inalso plan to get when Powell cuts rates.

I’m going launch it off the beach. It doesn’t sound like the apocalypse to me.

For fellow beach bums, do y’all notice this one weird occurrence when beach driving? My old man used to go down to OBX in the 70s. He had the first model Jimmy and told me about this phenomenon. I’ve noticed the same thing. It’s understandable if you’re fishing at the point on HI, but it’s funny to me when I’m in some random spot of straight beach in OI.

No matter where I pull up to the shoreline, and I always put maximum distance between me and the next guy (on OI that can be 1/4 mile or more), some jabroni inevitably pulls up right next to me. And it seem that if we’re surfing, it’ll be a guy who’s fishing, if I’m fishing, it’s surfers. If I’m letting the dog run around and catch frisbees, it’s someone with their own dog or kids or someone that hates dogs. And it’s not like people pull up and introduce themselves and try to be sociable. I don’t mind meeting people, hanging out, etc. We can share beer and talk Jeeps, fishing, etc. But that’s usually not what happens. Other than Carolina good ol’ boys who are usually pretty friendly, I mostly get these lugubrious dudes who act like they don’t like people. Why did hell then did you pull up next to me? My old man is totally right about this and it makes no sense. Literally miles of empty beach and I get a dude pull up close enough next to me that I can hit their truck with my frisbee, and act all bitchy about sharing the beach.

So what's the difference, is it a locals thing? Oceano Dunes vs Pismo Beach.
Technically Pismo is the north side of the beach and Oceano Dunes is the south side with camping and ohv riding. However we refer to the area as both interchangeably.

I was figuring it was kinda something like that. I'm from WA state, but my son and I've been on the Dunes with quads.
It's probably perfect with a Jeep, but was a little disappointed with the quads. Guess I let the hype get the better of me. Then again, throttle time is throttle time, and any throttle time is better than couch time.
That being said, I'd stop again if I was in the area. Hopefully I'll have my Gladiator down there someday and we can camp a night or two.

Is camping limited to the area close to the beach?
