Did you ever look at a oil Thread, and wonder what all of the abbreviation's stood for. I put together the following, to help with the communications, of what each stands for. Please see below:
Abbreviation, and meanings of same. These are used in oil Threads, as follows:
1.TBN (Total Base Number) The ability to neutralize acid.
2. OCI (Oil change intervals).
3. MOFT (Film Thickness).
4. Oil Viscosity (Weight level at different temperatures).
5. MIL-SPEC, (military specification, military standard (MIL-STD)) is a United States Defense standard used to describe a product that meets specific performance and manufacturing standards for equipment and chemicals.
6. VIIS (Viscosity Index Improvers)

9. KV100 Kinney KV100 oil is used for stage mechanical vacuum pumps with ultimate vacuum specifications of . 010 Torr. This product is a blend of solvent-refined paraffinic-based oils with R & O and defoamer additives.

What chemical is defoamer?
Typically, defoamers are inert chemicals. Defoamers are comprised of a liquid, such as mineral oil or silicone, and a hydrophobic solid, such as hydrophobic silica, ethylene-bis-stearamide, fatty acid, and/or fatty alcohol. An effective defoamer must be insoluble in the medium it is defoaming.

12. NOACK The Noack volatility of an oil is defined as the weight loss of the oil when it is held under isothermal conditions at 250 °C for a period of up to one hour, depending on result collected from the reference material, under a constant flow of nitrogen.

14. GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) Gasoline direct injection (GDI), also known as petrol direct injection (PDI), is a mixture formation system for internal combustion engines that run on gasoline (petrol), where fuel is injected into the combustion chamber.
15. MRV The mini-rotary viscometer is a device used to measure the pumpability of an engine oil at low temperatures. Engine oils must meet viscometric standards including those determined by the MRV in order to be classifiable within SAE J300 viscosity grades.
16. PAO (Polyalphaolefin) Polyalphaolefin (PAO) fluids are the most common major synthetic base oil used in industrial and automotive lubricants. These synthetic hydrocarbons are designed to provide superior lubrication performance over a wider operating-temperature range than petroleum oils and typically are less volatile.
17. PPD (Pour point depressants) Polyalphaolefin (PAO) fluids are the most common major synthetic base oil used in industrial and automotive lubricants. 18. UOA Particle count tells you the size and count of contaminant particles. Most UOA will indicate if a particular value is too high or low.
19. Oil filter Micron Rating. (The absolute Micron rating is the most important)
The absolute rating, or cut-off point, of a filter is the diameter of the largest spherical glass particle which will pass through the filter. These diameter dimensions are expressed in micrometers – or one/one millionth of a meter. The absolute rating reflects the pore opening size of the medium. Filter media with an exact and consistent pore size have an exact absolute rating. This absolute rating should not be confused with the largest particle passed by a filter: the absolute rating simply determines the size of the largest glass bead that will pass through the filter under very low pressure differentials and non-pulsating conditions.
20. Automotive oil filter absolute micron rating. Passenger car and light-duty truck oil filters typically have an absolute micron rating in the range of 25-30 microns.
21. Automotive air filter efficiency rating.
How efficient is engine air filter?
Air filters remove dirt by trapping contaminants as the air flows through the filter media. The percentage of particles removed is a measure of the filter's efficiency. A good quality air filter generally trap upwards of 98.5% of the incoming dirt. Every engine is equipped with an air filter to keep out dirt.
