Stuff like this just does not happen out in the ether. It happens because people have been skirting the laws for decades with a wink and nod when most knew eventually a day of reckoning would come when the laws actually get enforced. It is a lousy "Defense to Prosecution" to now argue it should not be enforced because it was never or hardly enforced in the past.

For the record, I do not necessarily agree with it but understand how we are in this situation to begin with. The solution to change it is a political one.

All of our Government Agencies have grown too large. Some serious housecleaning is way overdue.

The budgeting process is a big problem. If they don't spend it all, next year will have a reduction. If they do spend it all, they can ask for an increase for the next year.

This type of thing can go unchecked or ignored for a long time. Sometimes, it's just not worth the hassle to prosecute. I just skimmed the article, but it seems like the smuggling is what did them in.

My last diesel vehicle was a 2006 Duramax 2500HD, the last year before the emissions devices were attached. I ran biodiesel whenever I could get it. The emissions on it were clean enough to pass the yearly smog test. The only time there was visible exhaust was when I would mash the pedal to the floor, which I didn't do very often. It had 130k miles on it when I traded it for the first Gladiator. I have always wondered if I should have kept it.

I had a similar experience. We had a 2006 Ram Cummins 2500. I don't regret selling it, per se, but I knew it wasn't the best financial decision. Keeping a highly reliable paid off truck would have been much smarter.

I have a lml Duramax. Def heaters seem to fail every couple of years. I had a nox sensor or two fail. More emissions means more wires and more chaffed wires. And the famous CP4.
My VW TDIs had basically just an EGR. They had to have a cooler ( cooler leaks) intakes plugged with soot. That wouldn't be too bad if it didn't have one of the first emissions devices, the pcv that puts oil in the intake to mix with the soot.

My new diesel, 2.7 Mahindra has an encrypted ECU. Can't even find a scan tool to read it. All I want to do is block the EGR. Just not sure if I will get a cel. And if I do get a cel for the egr, I won't see a cel for anything else that pops up . Good luck finding a dealer that can read it. This is the problem I have.

I love my current diesel vehicles and won't be trading or selling them in the next ten years. I've accepted the fact that I'll have to put money into them, but that's still cheaper than replacing with a new vehicle. My goal is to have no debt but a home mortgage by the time I turn 55 years old. Keeping our current vehicles is a big part of that plan.

Maybe people should stop doing diesel deletes then. It’s offensive to see trucks spewing out black smoke. I want everyone caught. Maybe that pisses someone off, but so be it. There’s a reason leaded gas isn’t legal anymore. Just stop. Is my gas gladiator less fuel efficient on 37’s, sure. But it’s not my primary vehicle, and its engine is stock with the exception of a different air filter. I drive an EV on a daily basis to compensate for driving my gladiator on weekends and on trails.

This is the best thing I’ve read all year.

I have 8 diesels running over here. 5 TDIs, 1 Duramax, Mahindra Roxor and a Mahindra 5555. The Duramax has the most emissions and the only one with emission failures. I'm getting good at dropping the DEF tank. I'm on my 4th heater assy and this time I cut the price in half with a China aftermarket one. OEM was not in stock at the time. The China one has outlasted any GM heater assy.

It is far more politically expedient to go after a handful of the importer offenders than it is to go after a half million voting offenders.

Our collective eco impact pales in comparison (or maybe pails … pun intended) to the Asian impact. China, India, et al don’t care just like other countries (us) didn’t during the Industrial Revolution.

I’m in no way naive. I’m not breaking the law. And my EV is MUCH lower on emissions than a diesel. Even if you take into account the mining and electricity generation for it. MUCH lower. But keep using the same debunked arguments while you break the law and circumvent those laws that keep your air cleaner.

And my gas gladiator that gets 15mpg creates way less pollution than your diesel, even without deleting it illegally.

The last part isn’t even close to true man. Gas engine will set ST/LT trims which helps and uses only a series of cats to clean up the rest, diesel on the other hand will control injection events by how much and when along with EGR to lower internal temps which controls NOx, afterwards trapping soot for ash conversion in DPF and running parallel to that are intake and outlet NOx sensors to define reagent injection in order to control NOx all the while getting twice the mileage.

aside from that…..dear god I can’t stand coal rollers, but it has nothing to do with polar bears
