Ok I need a CB for EJS.

I've used a handheld in the past and it worked, only so so. But I'm volunteering as a trail guide so I need real coms. I was hoping EJS would go GMRS this year but they are not SOOOO......

Thinking either a Midland 75-822

https://www.buytwowayradios.com/midland-75-822.html

Or the Cobra 75

https://www.buytwowayradios.com/cobra-c75btfm.html?___SID=U

Leaning to the Cobra, once installed I don't see why I would pull it back out.

Ok real questions, I don't need perfect, I just need works. But what mount and ant would work well/best? Needs to be short enough to fit in the garage:

Mount, I've got GMRS on the driver side, so looking to put the CB on the Passenger side, not sure what antenna this is but looks like it will work?

Or the Hustler Antenna better? Not sure this will fit in the garage I'll have to go measure.

I ran the Cobra 75 for years and it worked great. You can leave pigtails hanging out under the seat if you would rather run a temporary antenna and only plug the handset in when you need it.

There's a small amp box it all connects to and you can hide that away.

My family runs that Midland and it's done fine for them. I borrowed it a couple times for other vehicles and it was nice to have a non-permanent setup, but the Cobra was easier to use, took up less space, and less clunky.

If you shop around you can get the Cobra 75 for about $150 but that's still expensive for what it is. I would make sure you have a spring on an antenna mounted on the side, think of what will happen if you snag something on the trail, it wont be pretty.

I ran mine into the bottom of the center console so it’s locked up when I’m not using it

I run the Walcott #3373. It drags a little going into my garage if I don’t reach out the window and bend the antenna back. I’m on 3.5 lift & 37s. I have it connected to my Cobra HHRT50 handheld through a coax to bnc adapter with no issues on group trail rides communicating.

Ok so now I'm reading on SSB CB like the Uniden CB Radio with SSB. Any reason not to invest in a nicer CB?

How do these work with traditional CB's?

The Uniden 980 is a pretty good legal CB with SSB but If your going to go SSB and want to talk really long distances but keep it compatible with typical CBs used off road you might consider one of the newer 10m amateur radios that will also do CB at upwards of 60w output with AM, FM and SSB. You can turn the power down to almost nothing when running on the trail with other Jeeps or turn it up to 60w and talk across the country or to other countries on SSB. Not legal to use on CB but this is what most serious CB guys and girls are getting these days. Some also have very effective DSP noise reduction usually found on much more expensive amateur radios.

Here is one of the better ones on the market today and this is a really high performing radio for the price. It runs circles around a Uniden 980 and does things the Uniden can never do. I have one and wish something like this was available in the early 1970s when I first started playing with CBs. The link below is the newest version that is shorter and has a VHF receiver for weather channels, 2m amateur and other stuff.

I don't recommend going with a ham radio that can transmit on CB unless you are an experienced radio operator. It's your responsibility to transmit on the right frequency and at a legal power.

If you don't know what you're doing, get a radio that can't do illegal things. Also, a lot of cheap Chinese radios, like Baofeng, transmit "dirty" and cause lots of interference with adjacent frequencies. Rugged Radios and other retailers buy them cheap, mark them up, and sell them to the guys who wear plate carriers and three pistols to Starbucks.

Only get a cb with ssb (sideband) if cb'ing is your serious hobby. You will never use it to talk to others on the trail.

I run the Uniden CMX760 in all my jeeps and even my work truck. The mic is about identical to the Midland 275. It works great. I did add an external speaker to all of the jeeps. Work truck its fine. Ive gotten mine for around $100 each time after shopping around. Paired with a decent antenna (not on my jeeps) it compares to my other CB's. I like the WX alert.

And as you know antenna can be challenging. On my jeeps I run the rugged ridge mounts that replace the AMFM but throw all the stuff in the trash other than the bracket. It hold the 4' fire stick and use a firering and they work well for local trail comms. I have run a Larsen NMO on the hood that worked a bit better but I didn't need the extra reach anyway.

When it comes to radios, I know people love their brands, but take your pick. There really isn't much of a difference from one brand to another. They are all limited by the same rules. Sure some may have this quirk or that quirk, but if your not planning on using it every day, and especially if its only for one event, honestly get the cheapest name brand around. If you later decide you want to get into the "CB hobby", you can invest more then, and hey, you will already have a backup radio.

I saw where someone mentioned SSB (or Single Side Band)? Seriously? That is definitely a higher end of the hobby level. Further, I doubt many others will have SSB equipment, which will make it completely useless.

I'm assuming your only talking to people in your group? In that case I wouldn't fret on antennas either. Any cheap antenna, and really anything sold by walcott radio, would be good.

If, however, you need to keep in touch with groups that are many miles away, this will require a more serious antenna setup...

All in all, GMRS would be the better option here, so much better it is to the point that I wonder why people still use CB for this kind of thing...

Same here. I've got gmrs (midland275) and the Uniden bearcat CB in mine. I prefer the controls on the mic. There just isn't enough space in the Jeep interior for multiple radios mounted where I can reach the controls. So the radios get put up on top of the overhead molle panel and the mics are secured with magnetic mic mounts.

That's a good looking and functional set-up. I also like the Firestick brand. They have been around a long time and make some rugged equipment.
