IF you plan on doing off roading with the 4Runner, then consider a 2023 TRD Off-Road Premium.

I have never owned a 4Runner, but after doing a lot of research on used 4Runners, many folks
feel the Premium trim is the best bang for the buck.

The Premium has...part time 4WD, A-Trac, MTS, crawl, locking rear diff, soft tex seats.
The options on the Premium are...MTM, KDSS suspension, sliding rear cargo deck.

Sorry about your Gladiator experience. Wishing you well with the replacement.
our 4-runner had these odd shocks that forces the fluid to the opposite corner.

My ace in the hole is my 1997 TJ, hard and soft top. So if I can get used to the Toy's lack of performance and overall elderliness of the vehicle's design I should be good. Fingers crossed.

These threads, and the responses, crack me up. If OP ever wanted to return, theres an infinite amount of these unspecial vehicles on the market at bottom-barrel prices because they depreciated like used lolllipops.

What's he going to miss out on? 16 mpg? 260 wheezing horses? Towing while the engine screams at 4k rpm? The Stellantis customer experience? A few of us have our beer goggles on... Toyotas are perfectly fine and I bet OP is going to be perfectly happy.

If a tree fell on my gladiator in the driveway my main emotional reaction would be the annoyance of having to file a claim.

To answer the expected question, yes-- I would've already sold mine if the value wasn't in the toilet thanks to Stellantis' horrendous management.

It is time to call it quits on the Jeep Gladiator experience. It has cost me time and money and worry. But 4th breakdown in one year, for the same (sorta) issue is too much. It was bad enough breaking down in the middle of route 1, St. Augustine, FL in traffic, but when it did the exact same thing (another new starter) in the minus temps in Vermont, it was the last straw for my wife. Luckily everyone, and the dog, are fine.

I love that truck but it has been lots of trouble. Breaking down 4 times in the past year for very similar, seemingly related issue. The dealerships in the St. Augustine and Palm Coast area of Florida have not been much help, either not wanting to respond to TSBs (aluminum steering boxes on two jeeps) or with turning the jeep away with no diagnosis... and charging 300 USD to tell me that they could not find anything; it broke down again about 2 months later on route 1.

I think the final straw is that nobody really knows how to fix these things, very complicated and they do not fit the "parts cannon" mentality that dealers used/are forced into (imo), so when you get an electrical failure, that doesn't show a code, I believe the mechanics drop it and move on. Who could blame them when they are paid for numbers.

I wish you guys the best of luck and I will miss that truck. I do have my 1997 TJ and that will stay and remind of a jeep should be. Thanks for all the good reading.
Bye bye felecia

For a second I thought 5th gen was the latest gen and was going to recommend you a therapist for your self-destructive behavior.

Thanks very much for that offer I will keep it in mind, and thanks for the tip.

I am going with the ORP, figuring the additional badge of the Pro is not worth the thousands they want. It is 23 with less than 15k miles.
What's the price on that out of curiosity? That's the same year and mileage as my JT Rubicon. Back in 2019 I was negotiating on a brand new 4Runner TRD OR and I had them down to $31k. Then the prices went stupid.

I had a 1st gen 4Runner, 1988.

My first 4x4. Had the 2.4L 4cyl and a 5 sp trans. It was dark blue. When I first got it, it was bare bones, not even a rear seat. I had the dealership send it out and, they put in a rear seat and redid the upholstery over in gray velour. Did a real nice job. I added an AM/FM/CD player and really good speakers, front and rear, and I put carpeting in. I also replaced the factory white steel wheels with some nice aftermarket ones, and put 31x10.5s on it too. It was a great vehicle. Went through snow like it was on dry pavement.

Unfortunately, some bimbo pulled out in front of me and I hit her car. Yeah, cosmetically it was fixed but, there was a lot of slop in the steering so, I traded it in, at 77K miles, on a '94 Chevy Silverado 4x4 Extra cab pick-em-up truck. I paid $14K for my 4Runner new, and actually got $7.7K on it in trade. Not bad for a 6 year old vehicle with 77K on the clock. I still kinda sorta miss it. Never had the roof off because I had zero place to store it.
