I am looking for a jeep bed rack that is capable of a little bit of everything but and under 1500. Can i be compatible with a soft top? hold mountain bikes? flush with the hard top? I have been looking all week and came across Overland Vehicle Systems but i am having a hard time finding a way make it work with mountain bikes. You who have been around the block? what have you found out to be the best?

Silly question but won't most mountain bikes fit if you remove the front wheel or just use one of those over the tailgate mats?
Also something like this would probably work.
No center bars with the kit but you can add them and put them wherever you want.
Do note I have no experience with the rack but have used metalcloak products with great success.

Taking the wheel off is annoying, and the tailgate pads wreck bikes.

I'm totally ignorant on the subject. But I do own a Walmart bike and, even thought it was cheap, I'd rather not wreck it. What's the problem with tailgate pads and bikes?

I’m curious to hear why it’s bad also. I’ve never used one, but I always thought they were a viable option.

They put stress on the down tube in ways it's not supposed to get, damage the paint, can damage carbon, the fork stanchions can get damaged if you have multiple bikes banging around back there.

A lot of bike companies are voiding warranties if they see the scuffs where the bike was transported over a tail gate.

Can you clarify if you are referring to a bed rack, or a proper roof rack?
I am thinking you are referring to a bed rack mentioning soft topper....?

I have an XTR1 from https://xtrusion-overland.com/ , can pretty much make it fit any design you need. Yes, they can make it go over a soft top, bed cover, and roof height.

Right now, our bikes ride the tailgate but I plan to get 1UP for them for either on the side or the top of the rack depending on anything else on the top. These are dumb expensive, but they're the slimmest ones I have found that could mount to the uprights of my bed rack without the bike sticking too far out, AND not have to pull the front wheel. Still, not ideal but sometimes we want to bring ALL the toys.

Something like this? I still have to remove the front wheel. I can leave the OEM tonneau coner in place for bed security and weather protection.

Gotta say I've never seen anyone damage their bike using a tailgate pad. Even with it maxed out with extra bikes stuffed in back. We've shuttled 8+ bikes on one truck with very expensive bikes no issue. Like your Jeep, a MTB is made to be used and abused and can handle it. If you're that worried just cut open a pool noodle for your down tube while in transport on a tailgate pad.

I use a rockymounts hitch mounted rack which makes putting bikes on and off super easy.

I'm running the JCR bedrack which is compatible with a softtopper and some tonneau covers. Rockymounts hitch mounted bike rack.

I spent 20+ years in the bike industry, saw a lot of damage from tailgate pads, especially carbon frames. I saw a lot of unrelated warranty claims denied because of it too. Never really understood why people were only willing to spend $150 to transport their $10k bike.

I installed the Sherpa Mid Height Bed Rack. It shipped for free & cost was $899. Super easy install to do alone & has lots of accessory options for bikes, RTTs, & anything else you can think of to attach. It keeps my Gladiators bed free to store other gear.

I'm selling my ZRoadZ for a little south of 1500 in the classifieds.
Its a great rack with gullwing doors. Probably one of the strongest racks out there.
