I really hope that mine doesn't eat one. But my trans is starting to really act up in the morning when cold. Trans shift goes 1-2-3 oK THEN 3-4A few times with a bump. When warm it's all ok.
Yeah mine is getting changed next week ,I have looked into this extensively. It is an electrical issue my transmission once in gear never slips but the 3-4shift is super tough. I often ans have for 30k shifted manually 123-then 4 and left off the fuel like a standard clutch to keep it from jolting into gear. When cold if I try and use D it wont go into 4th unless at certian speed. And rpms above 3k. The reverse started messing up not wanting to go in and thats when I realized after a code popped up that said no communication from TCM. So after pricing a TCM complete with new valve body and a D-Clutch . I realized I could get a used very low mileage transmission cheaper. So that is exactly what I did. It is sitting at the dealer waiting for me to drop the truck off on the 14th of this month. They will install a used transmission if I supply everything( including a new transmission cooler)and pay labor. So I collected the filter the pan gasket fluid, the trans cooler, and of course the transmission.
It is of course mybown personal assessment. The valve body isnt hard to remove but there are 6 small balls in it and if one is in the wrong place it will mess everything up . Which is another reason I opted the other way.

PA is one of the California "CARB" aligned states would be my guess.
It’s not CA aligned. You can swap engines. The emissions need to be in the range of the original engine /chassis. Seems like a 5.7 with factory emissions would pass. If you fail, you can spend $450 in trying to get it to pass and if it doesn’t you get an annual exemption.

IMHO why do you want a bigger engine with more weight in a vehicle that is designed for lightweight off-road capabilities? I have had all manner of pickups and the 3.6 Gladiator has plenty of power where it is needed. The transfer case low side is there for a reason. The V-8's they do it but ya got to romp. The big diesels have to have huge lifts and huge tires to stay up on top of the mud. These lightweight gladiators with bigger tires just go and Go and GO !!. To each his own but the 3.6L is nearly perfect for what it is designed to do.
What is it, 100 lbs difference between a 3.6L and 5.7L?

500 lbs? Sure. 160 lbs? That's like having one teenager in the jeep with you. 🙄 With the upgraded suspension & power, you'd literally never notice it.
It all plays a part even in payload.
But I digress to each their own. I tow some with mine but most of the time its a payload . I dont exact weight I had in it the other day but I didn't notice to much of a problem at all. It did squat a couple inches. I already threw a bunch of my fire wood out before snapping this pic.

I’m over 5,900lbs now so what’s another 160? The extra hp and ft/lbs would be much appreciated.

I am unsure what my current weight is . Closest truck scales are 35miles away. Hardly ever get a chance to run down that way either.

I dont think they all eat cams . Mine has 129,392k hasn't ate one and I Run the guts outta mine.
I know some that have not run so rough and less miles, and have had the cam issue.

When it comes to the weight and the 3.6 vs the 5.7. I start to think about mileage for 3.6 with an additional 1000lbs pounds of kit out, food, water, gear versus the strain on the 5.7. I'd rather have 5.7 with all the extra weight even with the extra 160lbs. Overall it seem the 5.7 would handle it all better and thus be more reliable over time and maybe even have better gas mileage overall when full kitted and deflated.

I personally think if ya run em too gingerly it will starve them of what they need. I run my alot above 3k and even 4k never let em do it free. But I am the kinda person that aint afraid to mat it and get by that slow poking motorist . One thing I see is alot of guys have trucks sitting alot oil always dripping off everything and then having to start up and everything be re-oiled. My rig never sets more than 48hrs.
