I’ve been lightly scouring the internet vehicle classifieds and found a nice diesel rubicon JT that’s fully loaded and has low miles. I tried to get the dealer to accept my offer at the end of June but they wouldn’t so I walked. They texted me last week because they still had it and wanted to know if I’d still deal and I said but I’ll only purchase the gladiator for $X. They still can’t make that number but they’re giving me ok value for my 2020.

This 2021 JTRD only has about 38k on it where my 3.6L is closing in on 90k and it still runs and drives like it’s brand new. Only the camshaft freaks me out about the long term of the 3.6, but they may have found a fix for that. Just trying to decide in the next week if I want to get it or not.

Don't make any decision on the fear of the internet/cams.
On the flip side, don't make a decision based on fear of the diesel issues, either.
Some have the diesel and have no no real issues - same for the 3.6 - millions of them out there with no problems at all.

Do it if you WANT a diesel, can handle the maintenance and costs of the maintenance or need the grunt of a diesel (maybe you tow a lot?)

There's guys here in this very forum well over 100,000 miles on a 3.6 with no problems.

So do it based on your needs or wants.

When I was initially talking to them last month it was listed for 42,500, but they have it down to $40k now.

I used to have a diesel ZR2 Colorado and loved that thing. I’ve had many other diesels as well. My father has a new 3.0L diesel sierra and it’s also amazing. I like the convertible aspect and the more safety features on the JTRD than my old ZR2.

Geezuz hell! That's what I paid for mine brand new. Albeit not a Rubicon. But hell that's a lot. 40k out the door would be my final offer. With a additional warranty thrown in.

Sticker price was $68k back in 2021 so I thought it was a little high too before that. I plan on asking about extended powertrain warranty.

You can't really compare negotiated prices or what you paid. Most dealers didn't give that big a discount. You need to compare MSRP of what it would have been to now.

He can easily look up those numbers - NDA, KBB and more.

He's also got a trade, so that's going to matter. Some make up in the trade value. That's what they seem to do here. They don't discount the new very much but allow more for trade than what Carvana will ever dream of giving you.

Yeah they’re giving me more on trade then what I could get on carvana, etc. That’s where they’re making it more of a deal for me.

If that diesel Rubicon really is loaded, and from the $68k window sticker it sure sounds like it, then $40k isn't a bad price at all for those miles and it's all the better since they're offering better than average on the trade in. At face value this sounds like a good deal.

Used deals a very area specific. I would look up your KBB trade-in value, and the same for the JTR you are trying to buy. Most “fair” dealers take a fair/Good trade KBB value & add 10-15%. I usually target to get somewhere around 7% of that value. Dealer makes money, Salesmen get’s their spiff, and I’m not getting hosed.

Value is person centric.

You have a known in your possession. It is likely that the cam issue will not happen to you.

You are thinking of trading for an unknown that has the same probability of having the fuel pump issue and other electrical gremlins as the 3.6l cam issue.

Diesels will have emission issues especially when they get older.

I'm a diesel fan, but the little extra torque is not worth it. Keep the gas.

ANYTHING is worth what a buyer and seller agree it's worth.
Other opinions are based on our locations, personal preferences, needs, desires, likes, dislikes, FINANCIAL positions and more.
So, only the OP can truly know if it's "worth it".
