What I always wondered about with the earlier alternators, and I bet many didn't realize, is that the "fan" on the alternator, right behind the pulley in most cases, pulls air in from the BACK of the alternator and out the front. In some cases, that means the air coming into the alternator from the rear is close to exhaust manifolds and so on and not exactly cool.Yes they pulley is facing the engine and the back of the alt is facing the radiator.
And it's pulling air from the rear, out through the front, against the force of the air coming in from the radiator area.
It must have made sense for some reason, but I always wondered about it - questioned if it was better.
OTOH, I couldn't figure out a fan that would actually shove air in through the front and out the back. It was probably the easiest fan to design, so they all went with it.
