i bought it 15 years ago at an estate sale - Bruce Nottingham - he was an AMC racer, had an AMX, sheriff of nottingham. I bought some of his engine parts, tools and parts books.

See, he levelled things too, more accurately than me! That makes two!

Didn't read through all the posts, but did the OP measure what was drained and refill with the same amount?

And if that original fluid was actually low, or even too much?

We don't have a dipstick or anything to confirm that one way or the other. So if you're at 50k miles or whatever and doing this as preventative maintenance it's safe to assume whatever level it's currently at is sufficient for operation (otherwise you'd have had some kind of problem that required your attention sooner). So measure what you take out and put at least that back in.

Then go through the process to check the level that was posted elsewhere.

You’re right, 50k is a long time to run if the level was wrong. Who knows what would happen?

Can’t assume what came out is accurate. If it’s the first time, factory fill could be wrong.
Absolutely - it's just meant as a baseline. And it wasn't clear if the OP did that or if they just picked a random amount of fluid and were like "ok, don't know how much I took out - but I'm putting 5 quarts back in" or something. Not saying that's what they did at all - just wasn't clear.

Not really - automatics are fairly forgiving short-term.
It's not like they'd blow up or fall apart, it's just that it's not the best for a long life. You can run them a bit low (more heat, more wear), or a bit full (will resulting in more loading and foaming - shorter life) but in 50K you may not know it.
