About $450 in state and local taxes for my house (1100 sq ft, 3bd/2ba) on a quarter acre. I think my girlfriend is closer to a thousand? She has similar house on one acre.

No annual taxes on my truck, but I paid around 9% tax on it when I bought it. Registration fee like every two or four years for $75 or so - get a fresh sticker for my license plate.

Everything else is sales tax. On everything. Varies from parish to parish, but it ends up being around 9.5% for everything in a store or restaurant.
If we don't pay they will make sure we perish. Isn't it stupid how you never truly own anything .
If ya don't pay property taxes they auction it off even if ya own it lock ,stock and barrel .
I think property taxes are crooked .

I would actually like to own a piece of property that I did not have to pay taxes in every year . Is there a place like that ?

I didn't see my State listed soo
New Hampshire

0% state Income tax

0% sales tax

0 bottle deposits

$6500 property tax - 2800 sq/ft on 2 acre with decks and a 14 x 18 ft out building

$600+ this year (goes down every year) on a 23 gladiator Vehicle registration ($55.20 to state so the kids get the books and the town does some voodoo magic math that pays for roads and cops) I itemize so that's a write off

in January State vehicle inspections and emissions go away

State owns the booze stores, it's cheap and we drink for the kids!! (booze for books! no an official state slogan but we use it)

Now there is no free lunch:
9% Dinning
9% Hotels / Camping

The business tax is high and some other rich guy taxes like dividends but I don't live that life lol

Auto insurance is inexpensive since its not required but then again neither are seat belts required for adults (they get you for comprehensive however)

oh yeah life free or die isn't just a motto NH is a constitution carry and concealed state (yep no permit other then 2A) and if you pay the fed stamps you get the fun stuff
You make up for 0 in some places by having double the property taxes as here.............
We also have no emissions checks and haven't had any vehicle inspections since the 1970s.
Your vehicle registration is also a bit higher than here - I pay a bit under that for a 25.

Part of what states deal with is size and population density.......... when there's fewer people in 100 square miles and you have to drive 30-60 minutes to get anywhere, there's a whole lot of roads that have to be built. (and people today expect them to be perfectly spotless all winter long and bitch if it takes someone over an hour to clear their street - not kidding.)

You'll have to buy an island. I hear Epstein Island may be for sale. :)
Who in their right mind would buy that place with the stigma attached to it 😂

So you are telling me that when I visit Louisiana and stop at a gas station in the morning and get a few boudin balls that I am paying a 9% or more tax on them? That doesn't seem right to me.

7% in Des Moines and other places in Iowa.

I bet part of it is the cost of getting the alligators for the meat for those balls

My bad, groceries are exempt from the state tax, but locals jurisdiction may charge a tax (usually around 5%).

Your boudin balls are a grey area - but generally if it is ready to eat and sold as such, you pay local and state sales tax.

Edit: Looked back at a recent grocery store receipt. All my typical groceries are tax exempt, but the Jose Cuervo and Yuengling were both taxed fully. So, ready to eat food and any alcohol.

This receipt has three different taxes broke out in it 🤣

I live in IL, who I swear is working hard to be the worst state in the nation for pretty much all things tax related. We are #1 in a lot of tax metrics.

7% sales tax on vehicle purchases. My property taxes eclipse my mortgage payment by several hundred dollars each month. It’s so awesome.
Why I left there in 87. The only good thing was the vehicle tag fee's vs several other States I've lived in. I don't want to think about what it was in Europe when I was there. 😳 At least I was under a different status then, so I just got to see what others had to deal with mostly.

In Tennessee, we don't have a state income tax.

State and local sales tax is 9.75% on just about everything, including cars at time of purchase.

Property taxes on our 4200 square foot house on 1/2 acre lot is $4700 a year plus another $500 a year for the vacant 1/2 acre lot that we own next door.

I hate property taxes.

Our house is 1/4 of that - just about 1,000 sq ft - the lot is roughly 2.5 acres, and we're about $4,000/year property taxes.
