I’m not sure on the shape thing because I’ve owned Range Rovers, Land Rover LR3 & 4’s and they all got 25mpg plus in most cases.

I never went on a trip without a break down and have horrible adventure stories. I went from Jeep to Land Rover because jeeps are good for what they do but on icy or snow paved roads like going to a ski slope they suck ! AWD is king in those condition.

My JT gets 16.6-17.5 mpg most days, I‘d like 19mpg
That’s a huge surprise to me since I’m a skier and I’ve never had an issue with my JTs and never had a breakdown on any of them. As a matter of fact my wife’s very nice SUB has AWD and she’d much rather we take my Jeep every time we head to a ski area. Tires and luck must be a factor. 🤣

Oh, and my new Mojave has auto 4WD as one of the settings on the transmission. Not that I missed not having it before.

As specific fuel economy per HP has improved so has weight been gained for net parity. At least the form follows function

I’m with @White Eagle I get around 16-17 during normal use. My travel time into town is longer than most people’s though. Around 30 minutes on a 2-lane to get to the nearest WalMart. That probably makes the difference.

While we are on the mpg subject, does anyone know how far back the computer goes to figure out your average mpg on the display? I am guessing it only computes for the last 100 miles or so.
It's based on your trip meter and previous combined instant/averages. If you reset your trip meter (either A or B) every fuel fill, you'll notice a avg mpg meter below it. That's what your average is based on. I use Trip A for my avg, and Trip B for actual testing/monitoring of mods/maintenance/etc. You can also try resetting the mpg meter on the EVIC screen (page 4) for more accurate reports in the moment.

I swear this group just keeps on giving . . . . also this is the most amazing visual explanation of my JT fuel economy I’ve seen so far.

I finally did some highway driving last weekend and cracked the 300 mile range on a full tank. 😂🤣
I managed 384 miles to an 18 gallon refuel on 87oct last week. Just didn't try driving 75+ on the highway nor did I rev it passed 4k rpm more than 2-3x during the whole tank. That's also with the 6 speed and 3.73 with MTs, even had the sunrider open half the time.

The Auto 4WD is essentially AWD when engaged. RWD biased but the clutch in the t-case and the open front diff make it act like AWD in that mode. That and the Full-Time 4WD from the Selec-Trac is AWD, more than 4x4 (similar to the 4Runner Limited Full-Time 4WD).

TBH I find myself wanting to daily my wrx more than my JT. Both are manual, both 4WD, both make similar power atm. But 1500lbs less is more fun, even if they do get the same MPGs. It also sounds way better (de-catted, big headers, 3" Turbo-back exhaust) and shoot flames (sometimes).

I also have a 2014 Promaster 2500 with the 4 cyl diesel, with a roof rack, awning, roof A/C, Solar panels, and a Maxx vent, and I get 30 or so around town, and about 32-35 on the highway...

Wish they could do a decent hybrid version!

I'm in a similar boat right now with my e46 330CI. It's a hell of a lot more fun to drive 250hp with clutch in a coupe that weights 3600lbs vs 285hp at 5000lbs in a big slush box truck.

Downside: e46 has an exhaust leak and a SES but the Jeep wouldn't start today, likely to an ESS failure after jump starting the BMW yesterday. Advantage is marginally to the BMW.

Also:

I'd give a toe to get 19mg. Best I can get is nearly 17 on the highway if I don't get north of 70mph.

I have owned five different Jeeps so far in my life.
1) 1985 CJ 7 with a 4.2l inline 6 cylinder, 3 speed automatic, 2“ shackle lift and 32” tires
2) 1995 YJ with a 2.5l 4 cylinder, 5 speed manual, stock suspension 32” tires
3) 1999 XJ 4x4 with a 4.0l inline 6 cylinder, 3 speed with OD, stock suspension and 32” tires
4) 1998 TJ with a 4.0l inline 6 cylinder, 5 speed manual, 4” lift and 33” tires
5) 2021 JT Mojave with a 3.6 V6, 8 speed automatic, stock suspension and 33” tires

I was driving my JT today and looked at my gauge cluster, I noticed I was averaging 19 mpg. Not that this surprised me as I always seem to get high 18‘s to mid 19‘s with the JT.
The thought occurred to me that every Jeep I have owned has gotten right at 19 mpg.

Seems to me the engineers at Jeep have this hard set rule for what kind of fuel mileage their products should be getting.

Just some random thoughts as I was doing windshield time today. 🙂
Well, they are, and always have been, bricks.

So yeah.

I just completed a 4,600 mile RT in 2026 Gladiator Rubicon with stock 33's, 3.6L. Carrying about 500lbs gear 1st half of trip. That leg the very best average mileage was 21.4 on relatively flat highways staying under 76 mph. There were variations for elevation changes and head winds. I do drive gently for mileage. Picked up a camper back and eventually headed home. The return trip with add'l 300 lbs of camper and considerable headwinds the first two days, the interstate mileage declined to 15.8, then 15.4, then 14.8.

If you want better highway/around town mileage in these vehicles (designed for aggressive off-road use) then don't drive with a lead foot. Slow, soft accelerations are essential. Keep the tach under 2500 rpm as the transmission shifts up. Hope this helps.

I wasn’t complaining about the mileage my Jeep gets just making an observation based on owning 5 Jeeps over the years.
Would I like better fuel economy? Sure, but I know what I am driving… a brick.
