I would recommend ditching the enclosure all together if you want better response. I suggest removing the subwoofer, enclosure and trim surround and replacing with a tiny box for this guy. https://www.down4soundshop.com/SD-3-Series-10-500-watts-D2/ enclosure can be as small as .4 cubic feet (+ .1 cubic feet for the displacement of the subwoofer itself). It ought to be powered by something more substantial than factory. If memory serves it can play down to 26.3hz
Oooh a new type of JT discussion. I once helped a friend with 6 jl10w-0 in his 94 eclipse. No reason the JT shouldn't be a tailgating monster!

yes sir, good topic. Did some work to the JK including replacing the sub with a Fosgate, but never got around to re-powering it.

somewhere i've got a red HCCA 1200 amp 1/2 ohm stable bridgable amp. I guess they were sought after like 25 years ago, probably not good by todays standards.

I'll probably be content with the alpine setup.

That's one plus about driving a 225,000 mile grand caravan, everything should be an upgrade. =)

If yall are interested I will post up some pictures of my build as it progresses. 2 Sundown SD3s will go under the rear seats in place of the removable storage. They will be sealed in a upfiring enclosure, and the box will be bed lined for water resistance. Will be my first time using liner in this way so I am interested to see how it comes out. Have not chosen an amp yet (marine rated) but it will reside within the factory subwoofer housing along with a DSP or LOC depending on how the LOC works. I can snap some shots of my sound deadening process as well if anybody is interested, it will be very thorough - dash and all, everything is coming out. I will be opening up the tops as well to deaden the space between the shells if it can be done.

Will also be removing speakers to make measurements for replacements, I'd be happy to make measurements for the subwoofer as well and get factory enclosure specs for folks who want to drop in a different subwoofer in the factory locaiton. Just let me know if thats something somebody wants.

Gotta finish up my other car before any of this can start though...

Replacing HU? ins't it fairly well integrated into the CANBUS?

yeah its like the US Del Sol but its RHD, has a different motor/suspension/trans, and an automatic top. motor is back from the machine shop built to 800whp tolerances so well see how high i can get...

no i will not be replacing the head unit. it will go like one of these two scenarios

1. Head unit --> Digital sound processor --> stock amplifier --> speakers
(after DSP)--> AM amplifier --> subwoofer
2. Head unit --> Stock amplifier --> speakers
(after stock amp)--> Line out converter --> AM amplifier --> subwoofer

Does anyone know if there’s a way to set up an external speaker to play along with the factory radio for tailgating?

Haven’t ordered my gladiator yet. Wouldn’t go as far as to call me a true audiophile, but I haven’t kept a stock audio system on any of my last 8 cars.

Debating on the alpine system. I’m going at least for the 7” display. Is the money worth going for the full alpine system vs keeping the stock and adding my own amp/speakers? I’m leaning towards the full audio system since I understand the canbus system can be finicky with aftermarket. I figure I could add another sub via line out connector is that stock sub doesn’t do enough....

Also, can’t seem to find out how many speakers are in the stock configuration vs the alpine upgrade.

Keep the recommendations coming!

I regret ordering it and the bluetooth radio.. Now that I have seen behind the seat a 12w7 passthrough to the bed looks promising.

I was in professional mobile audio for years so I suppose take this with a grain of salt.

I will be replacing all of the speakers, including the subwoofer. The speakers have excellent sound quality and fidelity, but are not nearly loud enough for topless operation. You will lose 50% of the music with the top off at 30/40 volume, vocals will become near impossible to hear and you instead get high frequencies. They do produce significant midbass thanks to the drivers in the knee panels.

The subwoofer performs well in specific environments, its peak is around 60hz. This is fine for rock music but falls flat in its face around 40hz and lower. It too suffers from output issues. In addition, certain frequencies rattle the bajesus out of the trim panel surrounding the sub.

This all being said, this is one of the best (if not the best) factory sound systems I have heard. I suspect most people will be extremely satisfied in top up doors on environments.
Hey I work in the same field, any plans for what you are going to do for upgrades? I've got a list going but i may have over looked some areas.

I’d love to get more info on replacement speakers, including the sub. If that means adding an amp I’d like to hear about that, too. I’ve got the 7” HU and Alpine.
