Have you isolated the sound? Is the sound produced from within the cab (clutch pedal area) or does it sound like youre hearing it through the floor or in the area of the shifter boot? Is the sound happening when you depress the clutch but have not yet moved the stick from one gear to the next gear, or is it happening while the clutch is pedal is pressed and trying to engage the next gear? Maybe have some one ride in the bed or have a door removed to better hear the sound. Fortunately its only during the shifting operation, so that kinda narrows it down.

The sound seems like it's coming from the clutch pedal area and not the shifter boot. I can hear it through the floor and the noise is little bit louder when I have my window down. It makes the noise when I depress the clutch but not yet moved the stick from one gear to next. One thing I forgot to mention, the crunch noise happens usually when I'm shifting above 3k rpm.

You mention that it usually happens around 3k rpm, which means the engine is obviously running. In my mind it sounds like more of a revolutionary grind of a thowout bearing or pressure plate disengagement than an single movement engaging crunch. Have you tried to replicate the sound with engine off? have you tried with the stick in neutral, reving to 3k or so and pressing and releasing the clutch (park brake on)? Have you tried in 4HI/LO and reverse? seems 4LO would be easy to replicate the sound at a slower speed and in 3rd/4th gear.

Thanks for your inputs, I'll test it in neutral later today and see if it makes the sound. I don't really have a place to test it in 4HI/LO since I heard it's not recommended to do it on dry pavements. You think this is an issue and I should take it to the dealer?

You shouldn't have an issue driving in a straight line while you test it out. It's turning that binds up the driveline.

It does seem that youre not alone with your crunch experience, so it could be somthing a dealership is already aware of, especially since JL's run the same manual transmission, and have been out nearly 2years now. You are right about 4WD engagement not recommended when on pavement, but more so when you are hard turning, and especially if diff locks are activated. It shouldnt hurt anyting to engage 4hi/lo on a 1/4 mile + straight stretch of non-traffic road (back road) for the sake of the duplicating the sound. Just disengaging 4wd before any major turning or highway speeds. If you can find a gravel road that would be ideal. You probably wont need more than 45mph to get in 3rd/4th gear in 4hi and 15-20mph in 3rd/4th gear in 4LO.

Sounds good I'll try that!

Took delivery of my MT Stingray Overland on Friday. Spent the weekend getting to know this new Jeep/Truck!

Since it took 3.5 months from order placement to delivery, I’ve had a lot of time to browse the forums. After reading what some people mentioned on here, I was worried about how the MT would perform.

I just wanted to say that this vehicle is a ton of fun! I haven’t had a vehicle with such low gearing and found it's so easy to get off the line and cruise around. Shifting is so smooth and the creature comforts (ACC, hill assist) make this such an easy drive. I really haven’t minded auto-stop, and just turn it off in heavy traffic.

It truly behaves like a four speed with overdrive gears but that works great for me. Even though this will likely be my last manual as MTs phase out, it truly drives better than any other MT truck I’ve driven!

Looks awesome!! I can’t wait!! Let us know if you experience the clutch crunch sound MT owners have been taking about when pushing in the clutch but before actually moving the shifter out of gear at about 3000rpm.

I can say that I did experience this over the first hundred miles. Typically felt it more in 2nd moving to 3rd. Over the next couple hundred miles, that sound did go away. I’ll definitely keep an eye out for it.

I did have a question for the thread, how long does it typically take for that new clutch smell to go away? I’m at about 300 miles and I can definitely still smell it. I haven’t driven a manual in a while and wanted to make sure it wasn’t me!

Can't say I noticed any smell from it. Plenty of new car smell to go around, but not from the clutch.

Not slipping it excessively I assume?

Is the JT manual transmission shifter connected mechanically to the tranny, or is it some fly by wire electronic thing?
