Yup and adjusting will either improve, or resolve, or it won't. There are times it won't, then replacement is necessary. But if they document it like suggested, it's on them from there.Have the service department document the recommendation to adjust it yourself in the service notes. I have adjusted dozens of sector shafts in the decades I have been restoring and servicing cars. Most people don’t realize that the box isn’t manufactured fully adjusted. It is assembled and then adjusted and marked. Believing that the factory adjusted them all perfectly is like believing the government can run healthcare. Once you adjust a few Saginaw style boxes, you can tell almost immediately if it is out of adjustment once you loosen the locknut.
Best of luck, but go with what your experience tells you.
Things change once they are installed and used even for a few minutes. Things can settle into place, wear in, etc. - rough spots wear off, so all they can do is put it into their spec RANGE. Yup - it's in spec - but that spec has a range.
Don't sweat the worm gear preload - chances are that's not involved - and if it is, then that thing has real issues because going from PRELOAD to loose means it's WAY out.
Worry only about the lash at this point.
Adjust a little and test - going too far too fast isn't great either - might feel fine until you drive it then find oops - too far.
Sneak up on it.
And frankly, I'd mark the thing and document how far you change or turned it, too. Just for kicks. Will take only seconds.
