Bed Rack, Roof Rack, and RTT Recommendations Please

So I asked Fab Fours and here was their reply.


“We did test that and made an additional support bracket that helps with the flex and articulation.
Our design is meant for the “true” overlander so we did everything we could to test and make sure it would handle movement and rough terrain.”

So sounds like they have done some testing... seems like a cool setup to get a full rack from front to back... handle a bigger RTT or anything else.

Ultimately I got a different half rack for the time being as I didn’t want to invest almost 4K for a rack system... YET. But it is sitting in the back of my mind, so who knows!

I am looking into overlanding and need some suggestions as my searching isn't getting me where I need to be.

Ideally I'd like a bed-rack and roof-rack combination that could go together for added storage ability. I looked at the Fab Four combo, but the front part over the windshield just kills it for me.

I like the Maxium 3 roof rack as it allows the top to be taken off. But their Overland Rack isn't flush with the roof rack. It sits about 2.5" higher according to the thread on it

I'm looking at Roof-Top Tents. So many options. The CVT Mt. Shasta with extension looks nice though it's only a 2 person. Does it take a long time to set up and take down? That is perhaps the biggest consideration for my choice in tent, that and it needs to sleep at least 3, maybe 4 (me wife and infant so far. but I eventually want this to be suited for a family of 5)


Also, looks like no matter who I go with I'll be spending $5500 on this setup? $1500 for bed rack, $1000 for roof rack, $3000 for tent. Ballpark. And the weight will be what, 500lbs? 200-250lbs for tent, 150-200lbs for bed rack, 100-150lbs for roof rack.

ETA: I am thinking about going with the JCR full bed rack and half roof-rack. Does anyone know the static weight capacity? Dynamic on-road capacity is 500lbs so off-road should be half that, and static should be 3x that?

Of course the best option would be a Leitner Forged rack with its 1400lbs static capacity, 800lb dynamic on-road, and 400lbs dynamic off-road capacities! But it is the most expensive and hardest to install

Nuthouse is a great product but way too expensive for me. I am thinking whether RCI or some other bed rack can be put that will still work for that overhang.

Not sure what your budget is, but I approached my process asking similar questions. Eventually what I wound up with is:

• Nuthouse Industries full-height rack (can also be made with removable cross-members) - aluminum, light weight, has lots of additional storage and can be fully customized with lighting, etc.
• IKamper Skycamp 2.0 RTT - as the member above posted, it’s an amazing tent with huge amounts of room. Sets up in about 2 minutes, takes down in about 3.

I have a Xplor Full Height from Rebel Offroad. Can pretty much configure it anyway you want. The table mount/table have been more handy than I could've imagined. There are about 300000000 options for bed racks out there. Hope ya find what ya need!

Thanks my friend. I haven’t removed the top, but the freedom panels come off with no problem. As for a different rack that would mean the iKamper overhangs off the back, I honestly think that’s more of a personal aesthetic preference - I wouldn’t personally have any doubts about its strength/integrity.

One other reason I wanted a full-height rack: it will allow me to add an awning that would be about 7’ off the ground, which is important for me (I’m 6’3”). A mid-height rack wouldn’t really work with an awning.

Yeah. I don't like the overhang in the back so I will need to get a full height bed rack and get the overhang in front.
Perhaps I can look for some bed racks that allows me to do it. Do you know how much height it needs for mounting the skycamp? Perhaps the JCR off-road rack can work.

Rock lights, i forget which brand. Rigid makes them, as do other companies. I use them for ambient lighting in the campground.

I have JCR full and I want to have my tent over my cab not hang over the back. any recommendations on raising it 3-4 inches?
